HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) A 71-year-old Hampton man shot and killed a teenage robbery suspect Sunday afternoon, according to police.
Officers responded to the 2100 block of Kecoughtan Road around 2:45 p.m. Sunday for the report of an attempted robbery and shooting in the area. They arrived on scene to find 18-year-old Jafari Mitchell suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS transported Mitchell to the hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to police, Mitchell and a 15-year-old approached the 71-year-old man; one of them pulled out a gun and demanded money. The victim also had a gun and fearing for his safety, he shot Mitchell.
Hampton Police Public Information Officer Ashley Jenrette said, The victim did fear for his safety. He was cooperative. He called 911, he remained on scene so officers could speak with him he will not be charged.
Police say there are no charges being sought against the 71-year-old man.
According to police, the 71-year-old who did not want to be interviewed, was legally carrying a gun, and acted in self-defense. Police say Mitchell was shot in the chest, and the 15-year-old remains in custody without bond.
Hampton police made it clear Mitchell put himself in harms way and went up against a man who also had a gun. 10 On Your Sides Andy Fox reminded the step-sister that according to police what he and the 15-year-old did in pulling a gun forced the victim to pull his gun too, and that he fired in self defense.
The step sister said, Jafari wasnt even hanging with that young man [the 15 year old].
However, police said he was on Sunday.
Mitchells family says he did not own a gun, police wont say which teen had the gun. WAVY went to the home of the 15-year-old and they had no comment. There is no more information on him because he is considered a juvenile.
The 15-year-old was charged with attempted robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony
It was crazy, I was upstairs watching a movie and I heard gunshots, Alesia Hammonds, who lives across the street, said. I was like, Ill just go see if anybody is outside, and there were forensics units and an ambulance.
Hammonds said she is just tired of the same story on what feels like a regular basis; young people turning to gun violence across the street from her home.
You would think being across the street it really wouldnt hit us so much, she sighed. But its just too close to home. Its too scary.
10 On Your Sides Andy Fox interviewed Mitchell in August about crime in his neighborhood. Click here to view that report.
In the final twist of irony, this is what Jafari Mitchell told 10 On Your Side last August when we asked him how he felt when he witnessed the drive by shooting, There are too many people dying in the world. We need to end this and stop the violence, thats all I know.
Ironically, Mitchell lost his life because he was killed after committing what police say was a violent act.
Unless you don't pay your taxes, THEN they will come at you with a gun.
No, wait -let me guess. But I don’t have to, do I?
And that’s the fact, Jack.
Yep....trouble is it’ll be lumped in with gun violence statistic the anti gunners love to quote.
He was tryin hard to be the baby daddy to his baby mamas’ babies.
The hanging was overdue.
Yeah, yeah, we know, he di’n do nuffin’.
PGR88 you forgot to mention that he was a good Christian and loved classical music.
Huh? Just how far is it from her couch to the window?
” ... that area does not surprise me when crap like this happens, ...”
I grew up a block from that apartment complex in the 1960s. It was like Mayberry RFD. The area north of Kecoughtan Road started changing for the worse in the mid-1970s.
Right. We’re COMPELLED to pay taxes to supply the hood with all their “free” stuff.
This is the second robbery in Hampton in the past month in which one of the perps was killed by an armed victim. These knuckleheads haven’t gotten the message that more and more people are prepared to defend themselves with deadly force.
Sad. He will never go to college.
Got you beat. I was at a recruitment calling peoples names so they could be interviewed. I came across the following name printed on the intake form; La-ia, which I pronounced Lah-eeah.
A quite offended young lady told me that I was mispronouncing her name. She informed me that the dash in the middle of the four other letters was pronounced, and that the correct pronunciation of her name is, Lah-dash-eeah.
I kid you not.
Its a twofer, if they have “murder” rule...
Poor Jafari will miss the next Trump rally protesting for peace..
I thought it was “He who is bound to die early”. Must be a different dialect...
I owned a 1993 GMC Safari,,,,,, Damn fine Van....
Jafari not so much.
71 year old man saves West Virginia a lifetime of arresting this POS. Good riddance.
