Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is more comfortable with a contested convention than a brokered convention that's decided by power brokers in July.
In an interview with Fox News' Megyn Kelly, Cruz explained his reasoning for welcoming a fight on the floor of the GOP convention.
"A contested convention is a different thing where you go, if no one gets 1,237 [delegates] and you've got two front-runners, look Reagan and Ford battled it out in a contested convention. That's what conventions are for," Cruz told Fox News. "If you're fighting between the candidates who have earned the votes of the people, and it's the delegates at the convention who've been elected to do that. That's the way the system works."
The senator has previously expressed reservations about a 'brokered' convention and said it would bring about a "manifest revolt," which caused Fox News to label Cruz's new remarks as a 'revision.' But a brokered convention would involve GOP power brokers settling the convention, whereas Cruz wants the selected delegates to choose from the candidates who make it to a contested convention, so Cruz's statements do not necessarily conflict.
Some political commentators have speculated that the Republican Party could change its rules to lessen the criteria necessary to compete in a contested convention, and thus influence the nomination from outside the formal voting process.
As insurgent candidates Donald Trump and Cruz continue to run the table in the primaries, the Republican Party's leadership may begin exploring all options to shape the nomination this summer.

No.
One front-runner = Donald Trump
If Cruz is in on this scam, he’s just lost my vote.
I was leaning Trump but could support Cruz.
But not if he joins in on the GOPe treachery.
This would be the GOPe’s worst nightmare.
Cruz should stay in until the votes are cast.
Anything can happen.
Let’s just be sure nobody changes the rules.
Rule 40 Qualifying States (Need 8):
Trump SC, AL, GA, MA, TN, MS, HI
Cruz TX, KS, ME, ID
Rubio PR
Kasich None
Cruz is delusional if he thinks they’d pick him at a brokered convention.
Cruz winning at the ballot box, fair and square, good.
Cruz joining in on GOPe chicanery at the convention, very, very bad.
But wouldn't a contested convention end up being a brokered convention with rules being written as they went along?
I’ve said all along, Cruz would be the Judas Iscariot to hand the nomination to the GOPe’s chosen water boy.
“One front-runner = Donald Trump”
Exactly.
WOOHOO GO TRUMP GO!!
I hardly think losing 17 of 24 primaries/caucuses constitutes Cruz running the table.
Saint Ted is going to be in for a big surprise when Mittens takes the nomination from him. Wow, he is naive.
You got the difference between “brokered” and “contested”?
Cruz would not allow the Establishment to “broker” their awful establishment guy (probably Rubio) into the nomination. Cruz would fight that one to death.
In a “contested” convention, Cruz agrees delegates should vote for their guy as required in the first round. In subsequent rounds, the rules say the delegates can vote for whoever they want. That’s the game as pre-specified. Everyone has been playing by those rules, and they are fair. At that point, Trump may win outright with more than 50%. Or, Cruz might. But the winner is the guy who can get 50% of the delegates sent by their candidates.
Those are the rules as I understand them. They are reasonable. Like Bush v. Gore, you play by the rules set out in advance (in that case, the Electoral College), not based on popular vote.
Trump could easily win a contested convention by Nominating Cruz for SCOTUS to get his endorsement.
“That’s the way the system works”
Spoken by one who has made a career out of working the system...
He’s going for VP.
Hey thanks for the state count. It seems that there are few who are paying attention to that detail.
Also, Technically, PR is not a state. Not sure how that works out with rule 40, but I thought it required state delegations.
The lawyer’s nuanced lexicon. Yeah, folks are going to be just fine with Cruz as the brokered, uh, contested candidate of the GOPe. LOL
You have to realize that Cruz is a lawyer and lawyers love to play semantics to get away with lying. Cruz has a long history of broken promises and outright betrayals. Why do you think that he has so few friends in the Senate or in life. He has a long history of turning on basically everyone. Not that this is uncommon in politics, but Ted doesn't even bother to try and dress it up. He is one scary dude if you take the time to look it up.
You do know that there is a difference between a contested convention and a brokered convention, right?
Or, are you just hoping everyone else doesn't know the difference so that you can stir things up?
