Millions of ordinary Americans support Donald Trump. Here's why
The Manchester Guardian ^ | March 7, 2016 | Thomas Frank

When he isn't spewing insults, the Republican frontrunner is hammering home a powerful message about free trade and its victims

Let us now address the greatest American mystery at the moment: what motivates the supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump?

I call it a "mystery" because the working-class white people who make up the bulk of Trump's fan base show up in amazing numbers for the candidate, filling stadiums and airport hangars, but their views, by and large, do not appear in our prestige newspapers. On their opinion pages, these publications take care to represent demographic categories of nearly every kind, but "blue-collar" is one they persistently overlook. The views of working-class people are so foreign to that universe that when New York Times columnist Nick Kristof wanted to "engage" a Trump supporter last week, he made one up, along with this imaginary person's responses to his questions.

When members of the professional class wish to understand the working-class Other, they traditionally consult experts on the subject. And when these authorities are asked to explain the Trump movement, they always seem to zero in on one main accusation: bigotry. Only racism, they tell us, is capable of powering a movement like Trump's, which is blowing through the inherited structure of the Republican party like a tornado through a cluster of McMansions.....

It’s very simple.

We want the invasion stopped.

Trump stepped up and said he’d stop it.

We’re Americans - black, white, christians, muslims, atheist, poor, rich, educated, uneducated, CITIZENS. We think our country is the best in the world and want to keep it the way. We’re biased against anyone who disagrees - call that bigotry if you want.

We think both parties are against us - what does that say about them.

The last sentence: “So much easier to scold them for their twisted racist souls, to close our eyes to the obvious reality of which Trumpism is just a crude and ugly expression: that neoliberalism has well and truly failed.”

Neoliberalism failed.

Trade is part of it.

But the main issue seems to be “democracy” itself, and representation for evangelical Christians/conservatives.

The fifth estate has gone from favoring the left to simply suppressing the right and reporting on things Pravda-style.

The Ahmed Mohamed incident is a case study in this.

Twitter “outrage” over seeing Mohamed in handcuffs became America’s instant and official reaction, in which anyone who deviated from that was an apologist for Islamophobia and racism.

Not even any talk of “reasonable minds may differ,” despite the fact that the accusers crying Islamophobia neither waited for evidence or even considered that the response to Mohamed might have been reasonable given even the standards of “see something, say something” logic in place before 9/11. These accusers, concerned only with scoring partisan points and unconcerned about justice, also refused to consider more evidence that emerged in the days, weeks and months since the incident. They try to explain and bully it away.

Trump is one of the very few at this point who haven’t just shied away from these national debates (although I don’t believe he’s commented on the Ahmed Mohamed case).

Having now received the attention from the candidates in Idaho, I have to wonder about Ted Cruz's messaging. I don't feel that his message, while spot on from a conservative standpoint, are touching what the voters believe are the most important issues.

Trump talks about jobs, trade and illegals, while Cruz talks about the protecting the constitution which is great but doesn't do anything to stop the loss of jobs and the invasion.

I have to wonder if this is the reason why he is finishing 3rd in some of these states.

My daughter voted for the first time in this primary and voted for Trump. I am hoping that Trump keeps his word and selects barnburners to his cabinet and a bunch of czars to go after the illegal actions of Obama and the current Democrats and GOPe.

F to DemoRATS, the GOPe, and the Muslim poser in the WH.

Our responsibility to bring in Constitutional conservatives into the highest position in the US, is not actually an F you to anyone.

It’s a right that comes with responsibility.

He’s not a career politician.

He’s a successful businessman and America is a business.

He wants to build a wall and kick the invaders out.
