Trump leads poll with a disparate group campaigning. When head to head with Cruz or Rubio, he loses.
"An ABC News/Washington Post poll shows Donald Trump leading the race to become the Republican nominee for President of the United States. However, if the field were to consolidate, the billionaire businessman would no longer be favored in a head-to-head situation, according to the survey...]
[Cruz easily defeats Trump head-to-head 54-41 percent. non-Cruz or Trump supporters prefer Cruz to Trump 72-17 percent.
Among very conservative voters, Cruz takes down Trump 60-34 percent. Among white evangelicals, Cruz handles Trump 64-31 percent.
Rubio also defeats Trump, but by smaller margins, 51-45 percent. Non-Rubio or Trump voters favor Rubio 69-23 percent. He, like Cruz, is favored by approximately 60% of women in a head-to-head with Trump.

He hasn't gotten ALL of the others' followers. It is still not head-to-head. That's the point.
Rubio and Kasich are still in it.
He HAS made gains (Carson, et al)
You've GOT to see that, right?

OK here’s some discussion. First off I don’t buy the premise of the poll. No point in arguing it. I have no doubt that I could commission a poll that showed a majority believing the moon was made of green cheese.
As for Cruz. Teddy Milhous has all the ethics and charm of Richard Nixon together with all the electability of Barry Goldwater.
His ethics and charm notwithstanding, where is his path to victory? Does anyone seriously think he can win Ohio or Virginia or Ohio or Florida in the general election? The guy has zero appeal outside of states that will go overwhelmingly red anyway.
Teddy Milhous is the establishments “anti-establishment” candidate this go round. Should he win the gop nomination he will lose handily to whatever the rats put up. Which is exactly the point of the his candidacy: being the designated loser.
So while the tediban might get all excited about his chances in the primaries, putting forth a candidate who will lose the general and lose badly is just plain silly. And there are millions of potential voters, including myself, who will simply sit it out if Teddy Milhous is the nominee. I see no point in voting for a sacrificial candidate, let alone one as deeply flawed as Teddy Milhous.
Wait.
Why do you think Trump will do well through the rest of the primary season?
Are you depending on polls? Hypothetical ones?
Don’t disparage my standards if you follow the same ones.
C
Okay, you don’t buy the premise of the poll and then you go off on Cruz’ lack of ethics and charm.
Seen any of Trump’s “unlikeability” ratings?
Do you hold your own candidate to the same standards of “people-don’t-like-him-ness”?
‘cause Trump wins that one BIG!
Okay, then why do you think he’ll get all the followers of the remains candidates?
People have a choice between Ted and Trump every time out.
You do see that right?
Trump is winning.
“When did the national primary start?”
You know...(and I’m not sure the point you were making), I actually LIKE it when Congress isn’t passing any new laws or regulations.
Somehow, that’s been flipped around by some on this board. Now, they throw barbs at Cruz under the heading of: “What bills has he passed?” or “What has he gotten through Congress?”
If he’s KEEPING stuff from getting passed; if he’s STALLING more laws and regulations, he’s doing what I voted him in to do.
Resist, resist, resist. It may be damned well unstoppable, but resist anyway.
And, IMHO, he’s been doing that since he got up there.
Cordially,
C
I don’t think he’ll get ALL of them.
Never said that.
People have a choice between Ted and Trump and Rubio and Kasich and (until recently) Carson and Christie and Bush.
Trump doesn’t seem to be getting his fair share of those candidates’ supporters. At least to me.
You might see it differently.
But if you like polls that say Trump is going to do well going forward, why would you blow off polls that say something you don’t like?
Unless it’s just an emotional, “already made my mind up” kinda deal.
Not enough conservatives in Amercia anymore its just a fact
I'm afraid you are correct. A constitutional conservative would be my first choice. Philosophically, there is not much to argue with about Ted Cruz. Part of his problem is that he's not a "likeable" guy. Something about him makes people a tad repulsed.
As big a bully as Trump is, he does bring in a bigger crowd. I agree with Rush Limbaugh's assessment that a Trump presidency has a bigger upside than a down side. if only we could get him to follow that pesky Constitution...
Hey, so I read your profile page.
You know you’re backing losers, right? On this board, Sowell has gone over to the other side.
He’s totally sold out to the GOPe.
He’s a complete fraud, now.
You can’t believe a thing he says.
He used to be okay, but these days...whew! what a screwball!
[I wish I didn’t have to say it, but we’re in an upside down world these days. I’m being sarcastic!]
“Why do you think Trump will do well through the rest of the primary season?
Are you depending on polls? Hypothetical ones?
Dont disparage my standards if you follow the same ones.”
I don’t know if he will, I meant literally “we shall see”. Hypothetical polls are when a circumstance which does not exist are the question...like, if it was just Trump vs Cruz who would you vote for. Which is what Cruz supporters hang their hat on, even though Trump has been beating Cruz fairly easily. I don’t put much stock in hypothetical polls...there are always other determinants which come into play before and during a change like that occurs...making it very difficult to measure before a hypothetical event occurs.
I didn’t disparage your standards...don’t know what you mean by that.
;>)
It was millions LESS votes that obummer needed.
Do you tout/read/depend on/quote polls that include Rubio, Kasich, et al, or that describe a potential outcome in the future after other things have occurred (like debates, etc.)?
They’re hypothetical, then.
Your polls are hypothetical. You disparaged people who look at polls you believe are “hypothetical”.
I think that’s the nature of polls.
That’s what I meant.
I think you folks have overestimated the Caucus wins to mean something they didn’t.
Ted wasn’t gaining support. He was winning elections in GOPe closed shops.
In Caucuses people are very tight with the party.
In primaries people are not as closely tied to the party. They are much more likely to follow their own logic.
What else can you say when a state polls very lopsidedly, then votes for the other guy?
Something is up with that. And it causes me even more concern to hear exit polls go for Trump by 8%, yet he lost the Caucus.
Caucuses are not nearly as frequent now, and winner take all starts one week from today.
I believe that is when reality sets in.
Cruz is not garnering more support.
I don’t know if that would play out now that a Bush is part of the Cruz team!
First, Breitbart was only reporting what another poll (ABC) said.
Second, and more importantly, did this poll deal ONLY with people from states that haven’t yet had a primary? Because it seems to me that there aren’t a lot of states left that are in Cruz’ natural constituency (i.e. very conservative folks, including evangelicals). Many more are in the northeast, which seems more in Trump’s corner.
I hope it comes down to just two and lets see who wins!
Awesome poll! Absolutely proves Cruz is right about DJT’s ceiling. Cruz needs to offer Rubio and Kasich V.P. or top cabinet posts right now and get them the hell out of the race. They are handing the election to Trump.
And the GOP needs to cancel open primaries and winner-take-all primaries. Neither of those represent the true voice of the grass roots.
