The wary interest in Cruz from more mainstream Republicans is the latest unexpected twist in a GOP race where talk of a contested convention or third-party candidate is becoming commonplace.
If Teds the alternative to Trump, hes at least a Republican and conservative, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said. While Graham made sure to note that its not like I prefer Ted Cruz, he encouraged Rubio and Ohio Gov. John Kasich to decide among themselves whether they can be a realistic alternative to Trump.
Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, said Cruz is indeed emerging as the chief anti-Trump candidate.
I think a lot of people were surprised by how well Ted Cruz did, said Romney, who has thrust himself back into the political discussion with a searing takedown of Trump in a speech last week.
Romney has stepped back into the spotlight at a moment of crisis and chaos for the Republican Party. Leaders in Washington who assumed hard-liners such as Cruz represented a minority view have been left wondering if theyre the ones out of step with voters.
For months, GOP elites have lumped Trump and Cruz together, arguing that neither could win in Novembers general election. Cruz is an uncompromising conservative who has publicly criticized party leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), for what he sees as a pattern of giving in too easily to President Barack Obama.

I’m voting for Cruz in the Primary, but I have no problem voting for Trump in the general. I don’t trust that he would be guided by conservative principles, but neither were McCain or Romney, and I voted for them over Obama.
“I do not trust for any instant someone like Lindsey Graham. Neither should Cruz.”
I don’t think Cruz has much trouble trusting Lindsey too much.
Trump has said he enjoys playing to peoples' fantasies. And that he has.
Rita, he does that all the time. That is his personality.
Mississippi is where he was supposed to be today.
“I have absolutely no doubts about his sincerity and firm commitment to conservative values.”
In that case he is very naïve and lets himself be used by the GOPe, who will stab him in the back, as soon as he finishes his task.
Shame if true.
It’s obvious that Rubio despises Trump. The last two debates proved that.
His supporters would certainly not go for Trump.
I wish he would do the right thing and bow out before Florida.
It would be the best thing for his own political future. Losing his home state would put the nail in his political coffin but by getting out and throwing his support to Cruz, he might be able to salvage something... not veep but maybe a political appointment of some kind.
True, Cruz can’t “give” Trump delegates, but if there are 1100 delegates for Trump and Cruz has 800 delegates, and he releases his delegates after endorsing Trump, I’m pretty sure that at least 18% of those delegates will vote for Trump.
I am personally hoping there is no convention. There might be if trump does not win Ohio and Florida. I am hoping he wins both. We need to change the focus to Hillary and off this primary. Trump was doing it a bit before the last debate but this past debate was screw trump so he didn’t get to take on Hillary as he should have. Another debate Thursday. Ugh! We’ve had enough. Trump should quit doing them. He’s outgrown them. He should go to a campaign rally instead and perhaps answer the questions as the debate goes. That would be awesome and fun.
Cruz is vehemently against a brokered convention.
The trickle of anti-Trump sentiment is becoming a flood.
Don’t give up on Cruz. I haven’t.
Rita, please don’t read any anti-Trump material.
It will make it harder for you to support Trump.
But by ignoring all the negative stories about Trump you can love, love, love him.
Hate to ask for specifics but how exactly is Cruz being used by the establish.
Just the facts, nan.
“You cant help who decides to support you, e.g., David Duke.”
David Duke told the press that he never endorsed Trump. It was posted over and over on FR.
Whereas Trump is just the nicest guy in the world to Ted.
You Trump supporters are something else.
You applaud Trump’s meanness. It just means he’s a strong stand up guy.
And yet you whine if anyone says anything negative about Trump.
The fact is that Ted Cruz has never made nasty personal comments about Trump. He has decried some of his actions and positions.
Cruz must surely understand he will never get the delegates right?
FL, MI, NY, NJ, PA, CA, AZ to name a few.
He has only won two primary states his own and his neighbor. Could not win a single county in some southern states so where does that leave him,.? No where really.
So he goes along with the backing of the estblaishem,nt, money, Graham right.
Now here is the crux of it.
Neither Trump nor does Cruz with the help of the establishment have enough delegates.
Will the establishment reward Cruz and leave out Trump voters, I odn;t know.
OK they give it to Trump, nah never going to happen.
OK They say give it to Romney. Course now the Trump and Cruz voters are all pissed off.
The fact is the establishment is to blame for all of this.
Right now here in FL we are seeing AD after AD attacking Trump by Rubio, Establishment and Cruz super PACs and all of them are virtually saying the same crap and lies. It is like word for word.
Who, the guy that stated that he wanted Cruz assassinated? Say it ain't so!
Don’t know about his health, but what I do know is that his delusion is scaring me. Is it being too close to Beck I don’t know, but one thing is for sure. There is no path way for Cruz now to get enough delegates, and the establishment knows this and that is why they are backing him.
Cruz needs to call Trump and both of them need to be real men with no ego’s and put this to bed and do over the establishment .
"Im not saying I endorse everything about Trump. In fact, I havent formally endorsed him. But I do support his candidacy, and I support voting for him as a strategic action. I hope he does everything we hope he will do.
But by this standard, Graham hasn't endorsed Cruz.
I am ashamed for the people here who have moved to Trumpville.
It is a fantasy universe where all is wonderful, wonderful.
In Trumpville, one can ignore all the ways in which Trump has proved himself to be a liberal... all the donations and love for Hillary ... don’t exist in Trumpville.
In Trumpville, the great and powerful wizard of Trump has never hired illegals, has never praised Planned Parenthood, has never bragged about womanizing or committed serial adultery; has never scammed gullible people into giving money to a fake university.
Has never tried to force ‘little people’ out of their farms because they spoil the view and, by the way, they are pigs, pigs. Has never tried to force an old lady out of her house because Trump wants it.
Has never catered to the Mob or given money to corrupt politicians to further his business deals.
Has never sued multitudes of people or declared bankruptcies that hurt people.
Has never wanted to keep the present income tax system because he has very good use for all that money.
Has never been vain or engaged in a childish twitter war with a news woman.
All is well in Trumpville.
We have known who the true outsider conservative has been all along, Ted Cruz. The GOPe may hate Ted Cruz, but if the GOPe politicians want to get re-electd this fall, their chances are much better with Cruz than Trump as the nominee. They want to save their own political lives more than their hatred of Cruz.
