TIME FOR TRUMP TO ACT LIKE GROWN UP
boblonsberry.com ^ | 03/07/16 | Bob Lonsberry

It's kind of like the barking dog that ran headlong into the back end of a stopped car:

Now that you've caught it, what are you going to do with it?

That's my question for Donald Trump.

Now that you've caught it, what are you doing to do with it?

Now that you seem to have all but secured the Republican nomination for president, what are you going to do with it? How are you going to assure the American people that you are serious about the job, and that you have a specific and substantive plan for moving the country forward?

How do you show the people of the world that you are worthy of being president of the United States?

How do you lay aside the showmanship of the campaign, and take up the mantle of respectability that the office and the enormity of the task demand?

The Detroit debate was a train wreck. It left those who watched it with an odd uneasiness in their stomachs, some slight whiff of panic that made them fear the primary campaign might have gone horribly wrong. After seven years of Obama, built upon a shaky foundation of the irresponsible years before, America is in peril and half of its people are in a funk. Things are bad, and this election has to count. This is when we snatch the Republic back from the edge of a precipice.

So this election is big.

And as you shouted over Rubio, and boasted of the size of your schlong, a fear arose that you might not be big enough for the task. As the Fox moderators asked you the exact same question CNN moderators had asked you before, and you gave the same demonstrably ridiculous answer, a chill wind blew through the Trump Train.

At least it did where I sit.

When you gave the same simplistic lines you had given at the nine previous debates you've participated in, you raised doubts that you may not actually have any better answer. We know it's going to be great, we know we're going to start winning, but how. Specifically. What is your plan? In any area. Pick one.

A president and his platform have to have substance and specifics, and seriousness. You don't always have to be the buttoned-down guy most politicians are, but you do have to show that it's in your repertoire. You've shown that you are a good salesman, but you've not shown that you have a good product. There is no doubt you can be elected, there is grave doubt that you can serve.

And there is doubt that you have the temperament for the job.

As Rubio melted down at the debate, for example, an opportunity arose for you to be the bigger man and defuse the awkward confrontation. It would have been a display of maturity and reasonableness, and of your supposed negotiation skills, but you responded to his immaturity with your own, and the spiral into disgrace continued.

Presidents don't do that.

Presidents have to be worthy to stand on the tarmac at Dover.

Presidents have to be worthy to lay a wreath at Arlington.

Presidents have to have a personal goodness that allows them to be able to show love to all, and keep commitments to all, and to stand as a personal representative of the Republic, its flag and its people.

The hands of a president one day may have to fasten the Medal of Honor around a hero's neck – those hands should not have been held up to demonstrate the size of a penis.

A president needs the ability to be presidential; Trump has not yet demonstrated that ability.

And now is the time.

As the full-bore sweep of big-state primaries bears down on us, as the math becomes more and more undeniable, Donald Trump needs to prove that this is about us, not him. He must show that this isn't some outgrowth of his own massive ego, but is a genuine commitment to saving a nation that has enriched him and been home to us.

He needs to start acting like a grown up.

He needs to genuinely reach out to others by respecting them and speaking to and about them courteously.

He needs to take his platform – which fits nicely on a hat – and expound upon it with specificity and credibility.

He needs to show that if nominated and elected – statistical likelihoods – that he can actually serve.

And he needs to do it now.

Donald Trump is on track to secure the presidency.

And he needs to tell us what he's going to do with it.

Or a bunch of us on the Trump Train are going to jump off before it's too late.

These debates are 100% attacks upon Trump and he should give them all the finger and just do his rallies and provoke the media into giving him all their time all of the time!

There are three reasons why they're attacks on Trump. First is that he's the front runner and they're trying to trip him up. Second is that Trump's skin is thinner than an onions and he always rises to the bait and shows his narcissistic tendencies for the television audience. Third is that Trump is all over the board with his proposals and the debates invariably cause him to issue retractions the next day. And out of all of that come Democrat talking points for the fall campaign.

Clarification: Under the controlled conditions under which the press slavishly serve while reporting on Hillary, yes, she is able to fake serious and "presidential" better. Of course in real life she's cruder, ruder, and nastier than the worst parody of Donald Trump. But to find that out a voter would have to dig past the media shield. That code of silencio o muerta will only continue and become an even stricter through November.

But my main point was that the other Republican candidates are polling better against her now because more voters see them as apples to apple options. Trump is as much or perhaps even more polarizing than Hillary. His fans can't see it and there's no convincing them. But this is my honest opinion.

Your reply simple confirms to me that many Trump supporters simply believe what they WANT to believe, and ignore what they don't want to believe. Here's why I say that:

JG:"able to apply to return legally but that it could take years" NPS That's simply not consistent with Trump's own word 'expedite'.

JG "His choice of the word mandate is unfortunate." NPS It may be unfortunate, but that's what he said.

JG:"He is consistently committed to bringing back our manufacturing base" NPS He certainly SAYS that a lot, but he hasn't DONE it with his own badged products. Just a note here. I work for a company that exports millions of dollars of manufactured products to China, and we import none. When we go to china, we bring mementos to give to good customers. ALL our mementos are US made.

JG "Americans have forgotten how to negotiate" NPS No, Obama has chosen not to negotiate properly.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I do see the media distortions and have made an effort to pay attention. Like you, his positions are ones I agree with, by and large. I would just like one week to pass without him insulting anyone - talk about what and why, instead of who. That’s what has turned off a good many people I know personally. Not pearl clutchers:)

What makes you think that? More and more boots will be made in the US with US specs. Chinese made boots and shoes suck.

I think we’re gonna find Trump and Cruz are pretty close with regard to foreign labor. At least Cruz is proposing a moratorium.

... You should increase your meds, Rubio and Cruz lost the last debate.
He had no idea about the Geneva convention - had to walk that back. Then said he would change the laws, lol - Geneva convention gonna do over for him so he can have the military torture and target civilians? He announced the need for high tech visas - make you happy? He congratulated Rubio for working with the dems on gang of 8. He bragged about his penis. He lied about Trump U.

... I do recognize that Trump is losing ground with a lot of women and religious people with his approach and that his behavior offends them. I hope that in the end, they come around and pull the level for him in November because the alternative is much, much worse.

He can’t change who he is. KS showed Trump is the reason for turnout but not what you think. Record turnout, more votes for Cruz than entire state vote in 2012 - and DT had 23%. High energy against Trump. Difference in polls and votes - Cruz up 30%. Cruz outperformed polls by a minimum of 10 points in all 4 races Saturday and did well on Tuesday. Do you let your kids watch him, knowing he will use vulgar language and make fun of people? He is divisive and has very thin skin.

His record in the senate. His ratings with renown conservative think tanks.

What do you have to back up the assertion he's a phony?

You think that's an honest question?

There's plenty of men that I don't like and I have no problem in calling them what they are....and I'm not afraid to say it out loud.

Trump hasn't been part of the eGOP "scene" in DC and those that have spent their entire lives climbing the social ladder in the eGOP are scared they won't retain their positions if Trump wins. Period. THAT is why they oppose Trump.

so why can he not articulate ANY of it?

He could, if like our current pResident, he read from prompters but his stream of consciousness schtick makes him bounce all over the globe. I don't know if it's creative thinking, ADD, hyper-personality, or what but getting him to finish subject and stay on topic is almost impossible.

“For the record, I’ve heard Ted Cruz enunciate his healthcare plan in these debates”

A politician who has a “healthcare plan” is morally unfit to hold public office.

“Most presidential candidates have extensive political experience and know how to mask their rough edges while projecting a smooth and polished image to the voters.”

Causing today’s voters to lie down on the bathroom floor and puke themselves right to death.

Smooth and polished? Disgusting. Infuriating.

If Cruz wants my vote he’s going to have to get into the boxing ring with me and stay on his feet for three rounds.

Maybe so, but some how he arrives at all of his events using the "moron's private 757". He may not know every policy position verbatim, but the man is not stupid.

Whoever wrote the policy position works for {and is paid by} the moron.
