Voters get mad at Romney, double down on Trump
The Star ^ | 3/4/2016 | Alexander Panetta

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA.—The establishment of the Republican party is playing with fire by seeking to smother Donald Trump. Because the embers of rebellion are crackling in this Florida retirement community.

Trump-supporting seniors here are unfalteringly determined to cross the street in two weeks, enter the local polling station, and vote for the swirly-haired scourge of party elites.

They exude indifference to an anybody-but-Trump strategy, articulated by Mitt Romney and proposed by the party bigshots desperate to wrest the nomination on the convention floor.

The party’s 2012 nominee proposed the following: Voters should rally behind Marco Rubio in the March 15 Florida primary; Ohioans should vote for their governor, John Kasich; and people in other states should back whoever has the best chance to win, between those two and Sen. Ted Cruz.

That kind of co-ordinated attack could deprive Trump of a 50-per-cent-plus-one delegate win at the summer convention, and make it possible to gang up and take him down on the second ballot.

So what’s the response here to Romney?

Well, it can be blunt and salty.

“He can kiss my ass,” says 89-year-old Louis Fuccillo.

There used to a skit on SNL called “What were you thinking?”

I don’t know. Thinking of this Romney stunt made that pop in my mind

I’ve been mad at Romney since he went AWOL for the entire month prior to the election. He didn’t want to win. Both he and McCain were nothing but the GOPe’s token candidates during Obama’s rise to the throne. A puppet show for the kiddies.

When does Romney collect his check from Trump?

The putative leaders of the GOP have butchered their jobs as much as Obama has butchered his.

They have butchered them into such tiny particles that it's too late to even say, "Okay, we get it," assuming they did get it.

What they can do is prove they get it in time for the next big election. They are impotent in this one.

As we age we get more blunt in our speech.

I hope Romney doesn’t make too many more public appearances—he might get booed out of almost any public gathering at this point.

This has been a long time coming. The GOPe has slapped around its supporters for years. Promise one thing, do the opposite. However,it’s former base no longer acts like tail wagging lackeys. May the GOPe rest in peace.

Same here. It was obvious to me that both McCain and Romney took a dive in their respective election campaigns. Romney was the last straw: immediately after his seemingly deliberate loss to obama, my wife and I both withdrew our registrations as Republicans.

He has been AWOL as the elected leader of the Republican party the last 4 years.

I fervently want to see the Republican party die a painful death for all the lies and pain it has caused and allowed over all the decades of my life, save for selected time under Reagan.

To be marginally better than the Democrats is not something a party should aspire to be.

Romney made a fool of himself.

What an ignominious end to his political career!

Not only was his anti-Trump speech stupid, but it further energized Trump's supporters and weakened the Republican Establishment.

I watched a few minutes of Romney's smarmy, condescending speech where he lectured down to me as if I were an unruly child and my first thought was that if Trump isn't paying Romney to remind guys like me how pissed I am at GOP establishment, he ought to be!
