Donald Trump on Thursday night said he's changing his stance on visas for highly skilled immigrant workers.
"Im changing it, and Im softening the position because we need to have talented people in this country," Trump said at the Fox News GOP debate in Michigan.
Trump's comments came after debate moderator Megyn Kelly raised the issue. Kelly noted that Trump had previously opposed those visas, saying they "decimate American workers," but appeared to change his position at an earlier CNBC debate. Trump said recipients of the visas go to high-profile U.S. universities and "desperately" want to remain in the country. He said they should be allowed to stay and work in places that need high-skilled workers, such as Silicon Valley.
"We need highly-skilled people in this country," Trump said. "For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country."
ALL ABOARD the tRUMP EXPRESSSSSSSSS
It was wrong as of yesterday until Trump said he is for those vistas, now its OK.
With Trump the key is to believe the position of his that you agree with, and not believe him when he takes the opposite on the same issue..
There are about 11 million Mexicans who "desperately" want to remain in this country too. What about them, Donnie?
Agreed, and I’m a “STEM” who stands to be directly affected, and has been in the past. Long experience shows me that really good people generate far more jobs than what they occupy. So far as I know, Trump has been fairly consistent on these student visas.
The “abomination” of the H1B visa abuse you speak of is just that. Sometimes companies will bring in aliens with little to no background in the area they’ll be working, train them with American workers about to be fired, and then pay the imports 1/2 or 2/3. Some high level prosecutions with serious fines and jail time would cut this back greatly. (It’s hard not to use expletives when discussing this practice!)
I don’t care how desperate they are. If they are likely to generate more jobs than they occupy, keep em. If not, out they go.
For example, STEM students with “A” grade averages can stay. “B”, oh, maybe if they can also demonstrate that they’ve designed a useful product, or something like that. “C-D-F”, sorry, back home you go.
Me too
“Plus, he mentioned Silicon Valley! What workers was he talking about in SILICON VALLEY? It could only possibly be H-1Bs.”
No, a computer science graduate from a top school can have a F1 VISA.
He was talking about foreign-born graduates trained in the United States. These have F1 VISAs.
Look I voted for Trump but the skills shortage thing is bogus. It is corporate welfare.
There is no shortage of highly skilled workers. Trump f'ed up and he needs to clarify exactly what he means or he loses me.
Trump better do some serious damage control ASAP or he loses me. The media didn't make him say that he did this to himself. I would expect Session to come out and say something soon.
Trump a$$ kissing the Zuckerbergs of the world on National TV is very un becoming.
I will give him a chance to do damage control and clarify his position. His stated position is now different than what his web site is saying. I owe him a chance.
How do you predict that? How many jobs do the H-1Bs brought in to do the Disney work generate? How many jobs does an H-1B right out of college generate, regardless of GPA. H-1Bs fill one role in the U.S. today and one role only; they lower the cost that companies have to pay their technical employees. They're cheaper. Not better. Not more productive. Cheaper. And for corporations and people like Trump that's all that matters.
Trump is screaming about Ford moving production to Mexico. Say that instead Ford built a factory here and applied for 5000 H-1B and H-2B visas to bring Mexicans across the border to work in it. Based on his recent comments Trump would be applauding them for it, but at the end of the day it's still taking jobs away from American workers.
They didn't.
That is beautiful!!!
Thanks.
How could he not know that this keeps Americans with advanced degrees from getting work?
Astoundingly tone deaf.
Not if you are an American wanting to earn a decent living and feed your family.
If I'm reading Trump's position correctly then if he is elected and he tries to tax Ford for building cars in Mexico then all Ford would need to do would be to build the plant in El Paso, bring in 5000 Mexicans on H-1B and H-2B visas to staff it, pay them dirt wages, and Trump would be saying, "See? I forced Ford to bring jobs back to the U.S."
To be fair, every profession should have large H-1B quotas. Especially one for what ever it is you do for a living.
Welcome aboard!!
And your first post was to me, makes me ‘feel special’. :^)
He has been castigating other candidates re: this and we find out he has been using the very thing he has been very critical of.
“Trump said he was now in favor of the H1B-visa program - despite what his website still says.
So you are abandoning the position on your website? Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly asked.
Im changing it and Im softening the position because we have to have talented people in this country, Trump said.”
Not trying to argue, just pointing out he is flexible. Has been and will continue to be ‘malleable’.
Thanks.
