Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney's inner circle says.
The 2012 GOP nominee's advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
"It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention," said the source.
Romney is focused on suppressing Trump's delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.
But implicit in Romney's request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party's banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee. Another name these sources mentioned was House Speaker Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate in 2012.

He and Rubio can go swap spit...Ryan is more dangerous than Boehner...at least Boehner did us the courtesy of being drunk the majority of the time!
This isn’t a presidential campaign anymore. It hasn’t been since almost the beginning. It’s an episode, or more of Wile E. Coyote with Trump as the Roadrunner.
Revolution, baby.
You need to take Hillary out of the equation. She’ll be out of the race in the summer when her poll support falls into the sub-basement or earlier if she accidentally takes a dirt nap.
“Good. I hope he succeeds.’
So let me get this straight. If the MAJORITY of the delegates are going for Trump, you want that to be totally ignored and Romney to win.
So, you’re the Nazi.
Got it.
Loser! Keep getting schlonged!
I guess the peoples votes don’t tell the whole story. Im glad the establishment keeps us on the straight and narrow.
Ryan?
I’m splitting with laughter - excuse me, my insides hurt - I’m bawling over with laughter.
The pansy-waisted guy couldn’t even win his home state of Wisconsin for the ticket in 2012.
And the GOP establishment thinks he could defeat Hillary? They’re even more delusional than I thought.
TDS is leading to a complete meltdown of the GOP.
I voted for Cruz this week in my primary, but I will vote for Trump if he wins the nomination.
I am so tee’d off at Mitt Romney, who clearly has no honor trashing Trump after sucking up to him in the 2012 endorsement video.
And of course, I’m completely tee’d off at the GOPe, which is why I changed my registration from Republican to Unenrolled after the 2014 election.
It’s going to be interesting to see if Rubio and Cruz team up and cancel events in certain states, effectively consolidating support in order to take out Trump. That’ll tell us who is establishment and what the actual plan is.
Hell no, not this one.
Cruz has been arguing to his audiences lately that, “if you don’t want Trump, then you better vote for me.” Well, someone better get the word to him. The GOPe don’t want either of them. He needs to figure out that if he doesn’t want Mitt, he better support Trump.
The Cheap Labor Express will do whatever it takes to block us from electing a President who will enforce the laws and secure the border.
They intend to deny us the ability to stop the illegal alien inundation.
They have successfully been getting us to vote for amnesty candidates since the last amnesty.
If Romney had attacked Obama with half the vigor he displays attacking Trump, who knows what would have happened.
I’m not a Trump supporter, but I support the American people getting the candidate they vote for. if it’s Trump, so be it. Who are these elitists to overturn the will of the voters?
Mitt should have explored blocking Obama back in 2012. He’s another Dora the Mormon explorer.
“Prince Willard plants his flag, challenging all right thinkers to rally round him and fight the dread black knight Donald”
yeah, and thinking about this a bit more, it’s now clear to me that the rest of the GOPe secret plan is as follows: they don’t actually want Cruz or Rubio either, so the plan is for the GOPe to pit Cruz and Rubio against Trump as tools to try to take Trump out, hoping that none of the three can obtain a majority of delegates, at which point Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan will step in to “save the day” at a “brokered” convention, acing all three out of the job, and installing one of their own as nominee.
Kamikaze Romney!
lol. Yeah no doubt you do. You hate the country that much? By the way, The RNC Chairman just said he would never allow it.
Losership!
” the more they turn the convention into “Dealing For Delegates”, the better Trump likes it - that’s his wheelhouse.”
Maybe not in this case. The GOPe will insure that many of the delegates required to vote for Trump on the first ballot are their people. Trump won’t get their vote on the second ballot.
