Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney's inner circle says.
The 2012 GOP nominee's advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
"It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention," said the source.
Romney is focused on suppressing Trump's delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.
But implicit in Romney's request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party's banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee. Another name these sources mentioned was House Speaker Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate in 2012.

I think we all know that even Cruz is not the Establishment pick, they want Rubio, actually they wanted Jeb but he was so much of a disaster even the Establishment couldn’t get behind him..now they are doing this to Trump, once they knock out Trump, Ted Cruz will be next to be knocked out, maybe they wont do it with so much effort but they will do it
It’s getting sick out here. I just checked twitter and

“what we have here is a war...”
Maybe now we know why DHS bought 100’s of millions of rounds of ammo...
If he falls short but is close, then the balloting should continue and we will see whether switching take place. After all, this is the way it used to be done. But the same rules should apply to all the candidates. Treat the guy fairly or we all see a Bull Moose split.
“If Trump goes into the convention with less than the 1237 delegates needed to win, then maneuvers to dump him are fair.”
Even if Trump’s, say, 3 delegates short of a majority, the rest are evenly split amongst Rubio and Cruz, and the nominee turns out to be none of those three? Would you consider THAT outcome “fair”?
I think this will backfire on the Elites.
At this point, the anger is so intense that any pol or other elitist who doesn't distance himself from Romney's disgusting talking-down of voters making our own decisions is the problem.
Should we be surprised? No. This is Romney, who refused to lower himself to campaigning for the votes of 47% of US citizens. He's criticizing Trump, who has put on free rallies where everyone is welcome!
We need to think about that, and get angrier still!
ROMNEY REPRESENTS JUST ABOUT EVERY ATTITUDE THAT HAS DESTROYED THE US !!!
"Paging Ron Kovic. Ron Kovic please pick up the white courtesy phone."
It's been talked about today, i.e., pulling Cruz and Rubio out of Ohio so Kasich can beat Trump. Rubio cancelling events in Louisiana and Kentucky have already taken place. Basically shaping the contests so that Trump doesn't gain the 1237 and thus force a brokered convention in Cleveland.
JMHO...when they want to take Cruz out of the running, all they have to do is bring up the NBC issue to a judge they own. At this point, a vote for Cruz is a vote for Romney or Ryan.
Remember what Papa Bush did before the debate. He used his hand signaling “Throat Cut”. That to me he was signaling “let’s cut Donald throat” - FAILED!
I agree. Trump will stay put and force the others to run 3rd party.
“Have Tar, Need Feathers”
i’ve got several surplus feather pillows ...
Cruz and his wife are too smart and well-connected for that. He's no patsy -- he's all in.
and 4 years earlier Sarah did the same to Biden
He has...He’s got Jeb Bush’s financial team with him now.
Read Romney could still file in California ... still open, from my understanding.
As a reminder California is a closed primary state. Some are thinking CA could be the last stand of the GOPe on June 7th. Anyone thinking of voting for Trump needs to be a registered Republican to vote in the CA GOP primary. My husband and switched to independent a few years ago but held our noses and re-registered back to GOP just in case our primary actually matters this year.
-——The general assumption seems to be that Romney wants to stop Trump from getting the nomination, so he, Romney, will get the nomination at the convention.

Well, my assumption (not that it matters) is that Romney and the GOP want Hillary to win. They wanted Obama to win as well when they ran McCain and Romney.
Saber rattling raises more money than results.
——I, for one, would vote for Trump no matter what party affiliate is behind his name.
Same. Party affiliation just means your on a mailing list of potential donors.
