RUSH: In terms of substance? I disagree with Chris Wallace. I think there was substance in this debate last night, and depending on what you want -- depending on what you were hoping to see and then what you think going forward -- there's really only one candidate in this debate last night which was chock-full of genuine policy-oriented substance, and that was Cruz. And I happen to know, folks...
I hear from people constantly, as you can imagine, and I hear from you even on the phones. But there have been people during the entirety of this campaign who think that Trump is a pretender, that he really doesn't know much about what all this is about, that he's getting by on the cult of celebrity and other things in our pop culture that people get excited by and attach to. There have been people who say, "We've gotta expose Trump. Trump's gotta be exposed. He doesn't know what he's talking about. He doesn't know conservatism.
"He doesn't know policy. He's just up there saying things that sound good in a populist sense." So what Cruz did last night was essentially expose that. If that's what you think needs and has needed to happen, Cruz did it last night. And probably the best way to illustrate how it happened is, one of the fears that a lot of anti-Trump people have is he's not really even a Republican. And they keep talking about all of his donations to people like Chuck Schumer and the Clintons.
Trump's response was, "Hey, look, you know, I live in New York City and they run the show there, and I'm in business, and there are certain things you have to do to get things done. You have to work with these people. But I'm a Republican." And he's made it clear, and he's tried to make that point over and over again. But Trump found last night Ted Cruz illustrating that. (summarized) "Look, if you think we have to beat Hillary Clinton, Trump's not the guy to do it. Trump cannot go out and hit Hillary Clinton on any of the things that she has done, any of her corruption, because he has contributed to her.
"He has donated. All that would have to happen," Cruz says, "is for Trump to hit Hillary in the debate and Hillary, and all she's gotta do is say, 'Donald, I don't know what your problem is. You donated to me to do this exact thing. So I don't know what your problem is now.'" And Cruz said, "We can't nominate somebody who donated to her." It's akin to the people that said we shouldn't nominate Romney. "If we nominate Romney, there's no way we can get Obama on Obamacare because Romney invented it in Massachusetts.
"Romney gave us Romneycare, and the guy that wrote Romneycare then turned around and wrote Obamacare," and it took Obamacare off the table as far as Romney's concerned. He couldn't hit it because there's a retort, "What do you mean you don't like Obamacare? You wrote its father. You implemented and signed into law its father, Romneycare. What are you?" And Cruz's point was that same set of circumstances with Hillary are going to occur.
Because it can be demonstrated that Trump's donations to the Clintons over the years -- including to the Clinton Crime Family Foundation -- have facilitated political move that Hillary Clinton has made. So the people who have wanted Trump exposed, that was pretty substantively done by Cruz. On the Rubio side, what Rubio did was literally just laugh at Trump all night, literally made fun of him, mock him. Not act frightened or afraid of him, and not be worried about ticking off his supporters, either.
A first for both.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
Pinging XenaLee to your post, as she's convinced Trump's favorable/unfavorable numbers will DOOM him to electoral oblivion.
Problem with your claim is....I don't believe Trump will ever become president. And I don't believe it was ever his real intention, either. But when it all goes down and after it shakes out....I'll be here to remind you of your claims and predictions. Bank on it.
I haven’t yet watched the 2nd half of the debate, but I actually thought Cruz did well in what I did see. Finally, it was in plain sight how much Trump talks but says very little.
I saw that clip with Trump saying something like, “If you are not going to vote for me, then don’t vote.” That disgusted me. He’s a pompous ass and reminds me of a 12 yr old half the time. He has a “nanny nanny boo boo” look on his face most of the time.
I’ll vote for Trump, but only over Hillary or Bernie. I would love to see Cruz debate Hillary.
Cruz is no outsider. Cruz was Princeton and Harvard Law educated. He clerked for a SCOTUS Chief Justice right after law school. He is a former member of the Bush admin. Ted Cruz has been in government the vast majority of his post school life. He is a sitting US Senator and his wife is a Harvard educated, former CFR member and a current Goldman Sachs exec. Just exactly what could somebody do to be more of an establishment insider? He is as solid establishment insider as it gets. He showed that last night by sticking up for his fellow GOPe member Rubio. The only reason he is despised by his fellow elites is because he is impatient and refused to wait his turn.
Donating $100k+ to the Clinton foundation is not a “straw man”.
It is disturbing. Excusing that behavior because he’s a business man is fine if that’s all he was. He’s wants your vote for the most powerful office of the land. That requires a higher standard. Liberal land is excusing people from a higher standard.
Sarcasm isn’t “lying”. It is sarcasm being used to make an uncomfortable truthful point.
It’s a total gotcha. He got both Cruz andRubes last night. They are toasteee.
The control of the Republican Party needs to be returned to the voters. It has absolutely lost it’s way. Cruz is not the guy to do it.
“Problem with your claim is....I don’t believe Trump will ever become president.”
What you believe isn’t my problem, it’s yours.
Any intelligent and unbiased observer, looking over all available evidence in this race thus far, will be forced to conclude that Trump will win the primary and the general.
Of course, something entirely drastic and unforseen could alter that clear trajectory, but that’s it. You actually have to pray for some sort of miraculous intervention at this stage of the race, if you support one of the other candidates.
There’s no objective evidence to support the belief that any of them can win.
Think of his reputed weight problems.
"Weebles wobble but they won't fall down."
And you’re STILL losing! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
Rubio has already stated he won't do anything meaningful about illegal immigration.
On the other hand, Cruz appears more committed to following through on deportation of illegals than does Trump -- who has admitted he favors 'touchback' deportation.
Sounds good...but I expect the best that Cruz could accomplish is to increase the border control, no fence would be built and we get rid of some of the violent illegals. That's about all Cruz could accomplish.
I've seen this similar comment many times; I never thought I'd see my liberal neighbor, Mika Bryzinski, Chris Christie, Savage....supporting my guy, Trump. Why that doesn't make people suspicious and question themselves is beyond me. Limbaugh, Levin, and anyone else who doesn't jump on the Trump-Train is labeled a sellout. Savage has shown poor judgement in he past; most notably his support of gun-grabbing, global warming alarmist, Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown in his run for California AG. Do you ever wonder why the people you may have trusted a few months ago are "on the wrong side" and the former idiots are now on the "right side"?
Read my post. I said Cruz is attacking the establishment from the INSIDE.
Cruz is the only politician with the balls to do it.
How do you arrive at that conclusion, I wonder...
Past history is indicative of future results. Supposed conservatives sent to D.C. have given us Obamacare, huge deficits, Planned Parenthood funding, zero progress on immigration and the list goes on....
Figures you would sign off as AHAHAHAH....
Trumpkins are indeed ignorant azzholesazzholesazzholes...
Whine whine whine whine when I start punching back when you and your cohorts have been slinging mud for about half a year by now.
Well, congrats. Your guy is gonna lose and I’m going to rub your face into it!
HA HA HA HA HAHAHAHAHA!
Yeh I love Rush but this thing has gotten ahead of him.
Cruz, however, hasn't been a part of those failures of will.
Instead, Cruz has been one of the few who has fought for doing the people's will.
