I have had to explain to family and friends that have wondered why Trump is so popular here in Central Kentucky and here are the reasons.
1. Fruit of the Loom who was the major employer in this community has slowly been moving their production south of the border and finally closed all production in 2014 leaving this community devastated.
2.Migrants have taken so many low wage jobs that remained along with driving wages down. They live much cheaper than even us common folks often housing several in one home. Employers take advantage of the lower wage workers. American workers can't compete with migrants that wave in and live several to one home. The migrants do spend in this community but they send the biggest part of their pay back to families south of the border.
It is that simple.
Obama 2008 “They cling to their God and Guns”.
Seems the GOP Establishment shares that contempt of average people.
It’s a big reason whey he is doing so well in Michigan.
We cant go 1/4th of a mile in any direction and not see the site of a plant or factory that once employed hundreds or thousands. Neighborhoods that were once prospering are decrepit.
My town just lost ANOTHER plant to Mexico recently.
People want most of all is a guy that gives a damn about our industry to at least fight the mess in DC and in our trade “deals” to start tipping that back in our favor.
What good is being the largest consumer nation if we dont at least make some of our own purchases?
Not just your area, the whole country. Every sector of the economy. Unenforced wink-and-nod immigration policy coupled with insane amounts of H1B’s has wrecked what little job prospects are left after the successful (for the globalists) implementation of NAFTA, with the final nail in the coffin to come with TPP.
Everyone sees through the BS now.
It’s the same everywhere though.
Go into a restaurant - all the bus boys and waiters are immigrants.
My company cafeteria - all Honduran and Mexican
Landscapers - they’re affectionately called “little brown men”
They’re doing the jobs that no “privileged” American would stoop to do. And THAT is the bigger problem.
I’m all for kicking out illegals theoretically I guess. But selfishly, I’d rather not pay $5 for an avocado or $50 for a $20 bottle of wine because those CA industries will now have to try and employ Americans.
It's amazing to me how many people here do not understand what you mean by "leaving this community devastated".
In Northern New England, you can see this everywhere.
The usual responses "well, it's the union's fault", or, "they should retrain to write video game software" are so far out of touch with reality...
More nuanced than that, but that’s the counterargument the Dems will give. If we need more workers, fix the immigration laws so we know who is who. We have no idea who is here legitimately to work and who is here to work the system. There’s no border security to sort out who is who. We set up barriers to keep highly educated law abiding citizens from other countries out, but we let the riff raff in and roll out the red carpet for them in terms of social services.
If your area is rightly mad about Fruit of the Loom moving jobs out of the country, why would they support someone who mad all his clothing manufactured in China, Bangladesh, and Mexico?
Free Trade has had a thirty year test drive with the American people.
The verdict is in.
No sale.
When you reference several to one home, what you’re really addressing is several “FAMILIES” to one home.
If you get three illegal immigrant families living in one home, they don’t have to make as much much as the single family dweller does.
They undercut the single family dweller, making it impossible for him to support his family and home.
The illegal can make 1/3rd the money, and still live in a standard of living they are willing to accept.
You can’t.
Yes folks, it’s that simple.
This is the corrosive aspect of illegal immigration that a lot of folks haven’t had to deal with yet.
I am in no way defending Trump or supporting him just stating what I am hearing. I have had to explain this to my children and my sister who lives in Atlanta.
It’s exactly the same story everywhere. The sum total is that all of the money is going elsewhere, resulting in a reduction in our quality of life. Yes, in theory “we” get cheaper crap at Walmart and household services, but it doesn’t begin to make up for the loss of income generally. Not a good deal for most people, yet our leaders push it more and more. Only Trump really proposes to reverse it.
Good post.
You are absolutely right.
My opinion is, unfortunately, that Trump is callously using these people and we are seeing the greatest bait and switch of all time.
But let’s say I am wrong.
What is Trump going to do to address the problems?
Yes!
What is the remedy?
"Free trade" is just a euphemism for selling out your manufacturing base. Trump correctly defines that our leaders are either stupid, incompetent, crooked, or all 3 and cannot negotiate trade deals which will benefit the country.
Because they’re fed up with one party (there is no two parties) imperialism and BS?
It’s rather comical to watch folks who support guy who may have created tens jobs in his life, talk down a guy who has created over 22,500 of them.
Ted doesn’t know the first thing about creating jobs. He doesn’t know about government regulations and how they impact the workplace.
Ted is another clueless Washington insider who tells everyone he has all the solutions when he doesn’t even know what the equation is.
Right. And I know the answer is = let them in legally and then they can pick the avocados. Like I said, my own selfish interests.
Look, the people in the examples I mentioned above have been hardworking SOB’s. I don’t know if they’re legal or not. But when we’ve had bigger landscaping projects than I can handle, I see these guys working. They work their assess of and never complain. Ever. 99 degree heat. In the rain.
My neighbor owns a paving company - small stuff, driveways and the like. They are all he’ll hire. He once told me, I never hire blacks because they show up half the time and bitch about a raise. A Mexican or -insert nationality here- will work until he drops and come in to work with a fever. A totally different mindset. These are not the people that need to be kicked out. You have to separate the wheat from the chafe. Damned if I know how to do it.
Anyway, didn’t mean to preach! :)
