President Barack Obama on Tuesday presented a long-awaited plan to Congress to shut down the controversial detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, insisting that keeping the prison open is "contrary to our values."

"It's been clear that the detention center at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security," Obama said from the Roosevelt Room at the White House. "It undermines our standing in the world."

The plan, which has been on Obama's agenda since he took office in 2009, hinges on the transfer of between 30 and 60 detainees to U.S. soil, and suggesting several possible locations in South Carolina, Kansas and Colorado. The rest of the 91 detainees at the prison would be sent to other countries.

There are currently 35 detainees eligible for transfer, and the plan

Guantanamo was subject to a 99 year lease which has long expired. We have effectively a month to month tenancy. Obama can turn this over to Cuba at any time.

If there's a way he can turn ownership of it over to his Cuban comrades, he'll find it. Then the Cubans can turn it over to their Russian friends, perhaps to use as a military base.

Russia Boosts Arms, Training for Leftist Latin Militaries

Moscow defense minister inks deals with Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua for joint exercises

February 20, 2015

Russia agreed to provide military training for three leftist regimes in Latin America and increase military visits and exercises following a visit last week to the region by Moscow's Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu, Pentagon officials said.

Shoygu met with defense and military leaders in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua and signed several agreements on warship visits and military training during the visit, which ran from Feb. 11 to 14. It is not clear whether any new arms deals were completed during the visit.

Defense officials said the Russian leader is seeking bases in the region for strategic bomber flights that Shoygu recently promised would include flights over the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.

How Russia arms America's southern neighbors

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Russia's push into Ukraine has put many on edge. But less known is that Russia is also strengthening its military links south of the Rio Grande and re-establishing itself as a power in the region.

Vladimir Putin has been strengthening military links here, and Russia is now the largest arms dealer to governments in Latin America, surpassing the United States.

Russia has even floated the possibility of building new military bases in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, and putting its warships permanently in the Caribbean.

In the midst of the Ukraine crisis, Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov recently visited Cuba, Peru, Chile, and Nicaragua, where he announced that Russia would also pour money into the new Central American canal project. ..."

"50 years is enough , " Trump said in an interview with the Daily Caller published Tuesday, referring to Obama's decision to re-establish U.S. ties with Cuba.

"I think it's fine. I think it's fine, but we should have made a better deal," Trump added. " The concept of opening with Cuba is fine."

No American, unless they are a radical liberal loon, wants a terrorist so close to where they live.

That just means he'll send them all to California.

It’s been said before, but Obama really is an enemy of our people (nemico della patria). Various commentators have described him as a traitor, a quisling, a manchurian candidate, a double agent, etc. When he refers to “American values,” that’s code for his own personal values, which are those of a left-wing agitator who follows the Marxist playbook of such subversives as Saul Alinsky, Frank Marshall Davis, Richard Cloward, Frances Fox Piven, etc. Before he leaves office, he hopes to further cut our nation down to size and reduce us to the lowest common denominator. Unless stopped, he will close Guantanamo, give it back to the Cubans, and transfer its Islamic terrorist inmates to US prisons where he hopes they will have access to the courts and be released by liberal judges. As our highest elected official, he has been a disgrace, a disaster, and a threat to our way of life. Let’s hope that Congress has the fortitude to stand up to him and stop him this time.

Relinquishing the base is exactly what I was thinking Obama intends to do.

KEEP IT OPEN. OBAMA AND MICHELLE WILL NEED A NEW HOME NEXT YEAR. SO WILL HILLARY AND BERNIE, THE “ODD COUPLE”, OR IS IT “THE OLD COUPLE”.
