Outrage at 'snake island': Massachusetts residents' anger at rattlesnake colony planned for uninhabited island but wildlife officials insist there is no risk
Plans to establish a colony of venomous rattlesnakes on an island in Massachusetts have been met with outrage due to fears that the animals could escape.
Timber rattlesnakes are indigenous to the New England state, and with only about 200 left, wildlife officials are fighting to save the endangered species.
Tom French of the state's Division of Fisheries and Wildlife hopes the snakes, which currently inhabit five scattered pockets throughout Massachusetts, can come together on Mount Zion, the largest island in the Quabbin Reservoir.
But people are concerned about their own safety - especially since rattlesnakes can swim and the island is connected to the mainland by a pair of narrow causeways.
French, who is directing the project and representing the state at a public meeting on Tuesday to address concerns, said people are driven by irrational fears. He said: 'People are afraid that we're going to put snakes in a place of public use and that they are going to breed like rabbits and spread over the countryside and kill everybody,' he said.

Insanity
I would be glad to send them some 7 foot Florida Diamondbacks.
I doubt the coral snakes would survive there but would send some anyway just for the Summer. Maybe they could adapt to the cold and start a new colony.

Hmmmmmmm...he seems to have given this a lot of thought. Typical Masshole liberal politics. Save the snakes!
Rattlesnakes can swim just fine.
The expression “mean as a snake” came from rattlesnakes. I’ve killed a few. Their bite is very painful and can be deadly.
They are dangerous and aggressive, particularly in heavily populated urban areas.
The nature lover goo goo who thought of doing this should be demoted, transferred or fired.
The Atholers (is that what a person from Athol is called?) would do better to worry about the rattlesnake colony in the state legislature than the rattlesnakes on Mount Zion.
Besides, putting the rattlesnakes on the off-limits island will stop all the people going there to look for the lost gold mine.
Add a few of those mean cottonmouths and its a deal. Why anyone would invite rattlers into their place is a mystery, but then again, so are many folks up yonder!
All of you wildlife loving tree hugging liberal animal rights wackos from ma who ooh and aah and gush over wolves being released in flyover country to wreak havoc on the people who live there and try to make a living ranching, have a taste of your own medicine.
I am from the government and I am here to help you.
I think we could give up a few dozen king snakes locally. Give them a couple of years and the rattlesnake population on an island will be back down to nothing.
Oh...that makes everything better (rolling eyes)
“with only about 200 left, wildlife officials are fighting to save the endangered species.”
Oh baloney. Timber rattlesnakes are common in several states. I’ve seen these “ rare” creatures in the woods in West Virignia and Pennsylvania.
Remember doing range clearances at Avon Park bombing range, wearing snake chaps and boots and those big rattlers felt like someone hit ya with a baseball bat when they struck ....
If the snakes don’t get you then the unexploded bombs will.
Mathholes from Athol. ;)
Believe it or not. That would be a VERY GOOD IDEA. THE FOOD SUPPLY IS ALL OVER. I don’t think that there is a food supply in that island. They will leave in the summer.
Crazy.
