...For the last eight months, the sophisticated view of Trump and Trumpism has gone something like this: Donald Trump may be a huckster, but he has done a service to the Republican party by bringing new, nontraditional voters into the tent. He has shown his fellow candidates that they can flatly reject the demands of political correctness and need not drop into turtle-guard whenever the New York Times takes a shot at them. And while Trump the man is not presidential material, Trumpism -- that is, the collection of populist and nationalist concerns that have become wrapped up in the man's campaign -- is potentially very helpful. Over the last 16 years, the Republican party has been largely ineffectual, both in power and in opposition. It has been hostage to a donor class that is almost completely at odds with Republican voters.
Trumpism, in other words, looked like a political movement that could -- and possibly even should -- be incorporated into the GOP.
There is some truth to much of this. But it turns out that Trumpism has corrosive effects, too. Witness how it has corrupted people in its orbit...

Our betters have spoken.
Really guys, if Cruz were leading the headline would be “Cruz-ism Corrupts.”
Bottom line is our betters can’t stand the idea that we’re thinking for ourselves instead of following their marching order.
“And now theyâll do nothing but attack me in response.”
I’m a nominal “Trumpster”. I don’t take insults to my candidate personally. I do point out problems with arguments that I find.
Your arguments against Trump should have been forcefully made over the last 25 years towards the GOPe. Egad! Look at the debt alone! You can’t say they weren’t complicit - they were.
If you are worried about the “final destruction of our country” you are quite late, my friend!
The GOPe must be destroyed. I never knew how it would happen. I’ve heard a whole lot of nonsense about “grass roots” taking over - it’s never worked, never come close.
Now we’ve got Trump. If you can’t see the opportunity to take down the GOPe with a vengeance - and have a President in Trump who will be a mixed bag for conservatives but will on the whole change the status quo (I think he will, but no guarantees when it comes to politicians) then let’s get you fitted for some glass for shortsightedness too.
I get it. You don’t like Trump. That’s fine.
But you would throw out an opportunity to destroy the biggest lie since the “great society” by tossing the GOPe out wholesale. THEY have almost destroyed our country - by failing to present actual liberty-loving conservatives to voters, by failing to oppose liberals and liberal policies.
THEY have brought us Trump. They have opened the door for him. I’d like to use the opportunity.
Very well said!!!
Lame.
This is what a reply looks like when the poster has no clue what the original intent meant... SMH
Well, I’ll give you this, you’re at least half right.
The correct course of action, of course, is to awaken misguided conservatives to the blatant dishonesty, dirty tricks, and phony conservatism of BOTH Trump and Rubio.
I have accused CW several times of being a paid operative. Of course she denies it.
No reason to take the weekly standard seriously
1. Their predictions have been wrong.
2. Their bias has been on display.
Better than being ‘saved’ by a Snake Handling “Seventh King”, Addams family.
How is the nomination of Trump going to destroy the GOP-e? The only way to destroy the GOP-e is to reign in big government. That is Cruz’s game plan not Trump’s. Trump seems to love love big government. I do not understand how Trump is going to “make America great again” when he hasn’t even identified the problem yet. While we were fighting the Democrats and RINOS, Trump was funding them! The antidote to socialism is conservatism not more big government with Donald Trump in charge this time.
Well stated! Thank you!
Or perhaps I turned the opening you left in your snide comment around on you and you still don’t know it.
At the rate things are going, King Ted won’t be bringing a lot of ‘spoils’ to Priest Rafael.
I think she is too. She doesn't respond with comments just other articles.
Nope.....
More BS from the Weakly Stupid.
A couple of them sure seem to have a lot of oppo research linked, quoted, highlighted and edited and all loaded and hooked to their ammo belt.
NOT your average FReeper. I’ve also noticed a couple of the others that have 3 letter capitalized usernames fall into this bunch.
The Wekly Stadard = The Esablishment Standard
To read the Weekly Standard talk about curruption is hysterical! This is like Al Capone talking about curruption.
The Weekly Standard is ALL ABOUT CURRUPTION.
They love the Establishment/Globalist Crony Capitalism/Facisim at the top and at e very same time embrace Socialism/Communism at all other levels.
They are the publisher of Curruption. They are pseudo intellectual fools at best.
Only problem is when he reverts to form...and he most certainly will...they will have contributed to the final destruction of their country through their incredible shortsightedness.
