Marco Rubio Laughs off Donald Trump Appearing to Question His Eligibility to Run for President
ABC News ^ | 02/21/2016 | By INES DELACUETARA

After a second place finish in South Carolina's Republican primary, Marco Rubio laughed off a suggestion by Donald Trump that the Florida senator may not be eligible to run for president.

"I'm gonna spend zero time on his interpretation of the Constitution with regards to eligibility and I'm gonna spend all my time talking about what this campaign should be about," Rubio said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

On Saturday Trump retweeted a Twitter user's claim that Rubio is ineligible to be president. When asked about the retweet, Trump said in a separate interview on "This Week" he had never looked into Rubio's eligibility and was only starting a dialogue.

"This is a pattern, this is a game he plays," said Rubio. "He says something that's edgy and outrageous, and then the media flocks and covers that and then no one else can get any coverage on anything else."

Rubio argued that Trump was able to dominate media coverage while there were still 15 people running for the nomination, but as the race narrows, "that's not gonna work anymore."

"We need to remember that over 70 percent of Republicans nationally have basically said, 'We're not voting for Donald Trump,'" he said.

Rubio also knocked Trump for not exhibiting much knowledge of foreign policy.

"To say, 'I'm just gonna surround myself with really smart people,' you know, that's not enough," Rubio said. "You yourself have to make judgments, you have to understand these things."

Rubio added the world would not wait until the new president "catches up" before it starts testing the United States.

I’ve been saying all along that Trump should sue both Cruz and Rubio on eligibity. I want the questions about the definition of “natural born citizen” resolved. And I want processes in place to keep ineligibles off the ballots.

Nobody should ever be fooled into voting for a Roger Calero again.

If the offspring are citizens, they are naturalized and therefore not natural born.

But then, neither one was ever naturalized. Rubio was born in America and thus a citizen by birth. And Cruz, so we are told, got American citizenship through his mother.

I see what you are saying about a presumption that they are not eligible unless eligibility is demonstrated. I was coming at it from a different angle, from the standpoint that nobody is going to stop them from running.

A court action could declare them ineligible but if that happens, will happen long after this primary election season is over.

I think Rubio, an anchor baby born in the U.S. o non citizen parents from Cuba, would be a citizen by statute...Congressional law passed because he was born in America, rather than natural born. Cruz, IMO, is a citizen by statute...Congressional law passed because he had one American parent, but born in a foreign country, also not natural born, two citizens, and born in America. But as we are all saying...let get this before the Supreme Court and get an absolute ruling on what constitutes a natural born citizen. But maybe wait a while until we get new members on the Supreme Court.

What about Barack Obama?

I know that this is going to disappoint all who read this comment, but the Constitution provides that Congress shall determine the definition of citizenship. In this role, Congress has modified the conditions by which a person born inside or outside the country to one (1) American citizen is, in fact, a natural born citizen. While it is true that the original understanding was that only the male parent could confer citizenship on his offspring, that definition was changed over a century ago.

I will put on my asbestos underwear now. Flame on.

Furthermore, blacks were not even considered fully humans.

Do you know why they were defined as 7 tenths human?

But the Constitution does NOT give Congress the power to change the Constitution.

Natural born citizenship is a requirement to be president specified in the Constitution. Locked in. Has been brought before the Supreme Court numerous times. That was NEVER its ruling.

Let’s hope Mr. Trump also excludes Marco and Nikki from his VP list. Both would be challenged in court before friendly Democrat judges for sure; something the Republicans were afraid to do in 2008.

Three-fifths of blacks under the Constitution were counted for representation in the U.S. House and per capita taxation. Northerners wanted blacks counted fully for taxation but not for representation; southerners, vice versa. There was nothing in the Constitution about blacks being less than 100 percent human beings.

Why would you say Floridians have wised up to Rubio? Is there evidence of that before March 15.

RE: Both would be challenged in court before friendly Democrat judges for sure;

You can always point to Barack Obama and play the race card as the Dems are wont to do.

It appears not limit now a days to who is a Natural Born.

1) Two Citizen parents Born US = Natural Born
2) One Citizen and foreigner
US Born =Natural Born
3) One citizen and a foreigner
born in another Country = Natural Born
4) Two Foreigner parents but
born in the US. = Natural Born

I think that about covers it, for now anyway. Did I miss anything?

Guess the words don’t have a meaning. Wait, they tried but failed to change that meaning a few times, or so has been reported.

Like the Law of 1790, that was changed in 1795. Then again, a simple Law doesn’t change the Constitution. Oh how folks like to confuse.

Then again we have,

Churchill’s Mom Us Born, Foreign Dad, Born in another Country. Best he got was Honorary Citizenship from the US Awarded by J.F. Kennedy. Why Honorary. In this day and time he’s a NBC.

So, if a foreign couple takes a flight out of NY JFK airport on US Airways, crosses over the International date line. Gives birth with the aid of the US crew members, is that child also an NBC?

Lot’s to consider, gotta think about that a bit....

“Two Cuban citizens”

They were, in fact.

“but it’s your brand of manure”

Explain where I have it wrong. Or do you prefer to get your panties in a wad, for some strange reason.

Cheap insults garner you nothing, They are American citizens, but you know that. What is so ridiculous is the level of hate Freepers like you are exhibiting, you might just as well call yourself a democrat. Trump is at his least likelihood of me voting for him when all he does is trash talk and you supporters of his will get no one to vote for him with your juvenile rantings.

Rubio IS an anchor baby, neither parent was a citizen (I don't think either had even started the process) when he was born), but he was born on US soil.
Versus...
Cruz' US citizen mother assures him citizenship even if born over seas (& even though Canadian law granted him citizenship as well). The father's status regarding "natural born" is his only issue and that is moot since Obama of Kenya was inaugurated.

Before jumping on the bandwagon remember how everyone on FR has bemoaned the biased interpretation of the 14th amendment by granting citizenship to millions of Mexican (& now Asian) kids born in the USA and speculate on the result of putting one in the White House.

When Rubio starts lying about trump like Cruz does, he’ll get our negative opinions.

Would it be OK with you if one of them was?
