After a second place finish in South Carolina's Republican primary, Marco Rubio laughed off a suggestion by Donald Trump that the Florida senator may not be eligible to run for president.
"I'm gonna spend zero time on his interpretation of the Constitution with regards to eligibility and I'm gonna spend all my time talking about what this campaign should be about," Rubio said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."
On Saturday Trump retweeted a Twitter user's claim that Rubio is ineligible to be president. When asked about the retweet, Trump said in a separate interview on "This Week" he had never looked into Rubio's eligibility and was only starting a dialogue.
"This is a pattern, this is a game he plays," said Rubio. "He says something that's edgy and outrageous, and then the media flocks and covers that and then no one else can get any coverage on anything else."
Rubio argued that Trump was able to dominate media coverage while there were still 15 people running for the nomination, but as the race narrows, "that's not gonna work anymore."
"We need to remember that over 70 percent of Republicans nationally have basically said, 'We're not voting for Donald Trump,'" he said.
Rubio also knocked Trump for not exhibiting much knowledge of foreign policy.
"To say, 'I'm just gonna surround myself with really smart people,' you know, that's not enough," Rubio said. "You yourself have to make judgments, you have to understand these things."
Rubio added the world would not wait until the new president "catches up" before it starts testing the United States.

Take it up with the judicial scholars :

“Do not try and distract voters with the false issue of whether I am eligible to run for President, when they should be focusing on whether Cruz is eligible to run for President.” - Marco Rubio
Did the Cuban dough boy get all sweaty while he was laughing.
Laughing is the only defense he has.
Two Cuban citizens cannot engender a natural born American citizen.
That is why he laughs.
The Memorizer Bunny was born with the Cuban nationality of his parents, he is just as ineligible as The Usurper who told us he was born a Britich subject. Who believes the founders would have found him eligible?
Undivided allegiance is what natural born citizen is all about.
Naturally a US citizen because there is no other possibility.
Born here of citizen parents.
This is the least of Robot’s worries ..the Dims have a ton of dirt they will use on him if he was to ever get the nom ...
But then, Rubio was born in America. So we’re saying that both parents have to be American citizens, in addition to being born on American soil? If that’s the definition, then Obama is ineligible to be president.
So many threads on this topic. Until and unless courts issue a definitive ruling on what “natural born citizen” means within the context of the presidency, we have to assume that these guys are eligible to run for president.
RE: Undivided allegiance is what natural born citizen is all about.
How do you define “allegiance”? Doesn’t ne have to PLEDGE allegiance in order to have it?
Does one de facto have allegiance to a country just because of his ancestry?
At the time the constitution was written most native Americans were not considered citizens at all let alone “natural born” and eligible to be president.
Thanks for being upfront-—things I never knew about that smooth talker from Florida-—watching him speak I felt he had excellent memory retention skills and had his stuff down pat since he tends to run along too fast and smoothly—hope Trump realizes this and goes after him and destroys his campaign-—he would be another disaster as President for our country
Trump’s tactic of questioning Cruz’s eligibility and even his citizenship worked well so why wouldn’t he go after Rubio? My opposition to the bellicose candidacy of Trump increases. With his supporters rabid attack mode I can’t see Trump losing the republican nomination. He’s likely got it.
As a Florida Tea Party voter and Registered Republican, i AGREE 1000 times over. Rubio stands no chance in Florida. We will beat his fancy little butt into the ground!
You mean the guy who calls others liars, is actually a bonafide liar himself?
It is meant to be an exclusionary term.
If one can be anything else, one cannot be a natural born citizen.
Foreign national parents and foreign birth comes with foreign citizenships.
There is only one thing I can say that Rubio expressed is 100% accurate
“”To say, ‘I’m just gonna surround myself with really smart people,’ you know, that’s not enough,” Rubio said. “You yourself have to make judgments, you have to understand these things.”
Rubio is correct the man has no idea of foreign policy. He is unable to express two complete thoughts one right after another before injecting a campaign slogan. Quite honestly, the man verbally cannot speak beyond the level of a grade schooler. I’d pose to say any position paper published by him was also not written by his hands. If you are unable to express verbally what your core beliefs are succinctly then they are not your core beliefs.
No different than teleprompter Barry
RE: If one can be anything else, one cannot be a natural born citizen.
Did Rubio have to go through the naturalization process to be a US citizen? Or was he born with US citizenship?
I’m with Patton on this and his open letter. Floridians know all to well who Marco “The Hack” Rubio is and he needs to be exposed for the fraud he is. I’m not just saying this because I am Cruz supporter. I am saying it because I am a Floridian.
Maybe Trump wants Rubio for VP.
