But then, Rubio was born in America. So we’re saying that both parents have to be American citizens, in addition to being born on American soil? If that’s the definition, then Obama is ineligible to be president.

So many threads on this topic. Until and unless courts issue a definitive ruling on what “natural born citizen” means within the context of the presidency, we have to assume that these guys are eligible to run for president.

Sorry we do NOT have to “ASSUME” anything. Educate yourself and read the constitution then go to Vattel for the definition which everyone knew at the time the Framers wrote the constitution. NO OTHER ALLEGIANCE POSSIBLE.
Obama clouded the waters and Trump tried to call him out on it, but records were sealed. The Republican Party, by allowing the candidates Cruz and Rubio to run for the presidency have not don their job of vetting. But then of course, it is becoming evident it was part of the design!

It has always been the tradition, as I was taught in school, before this was ever an issue, that natural born citizenship meant the parents had to be citizens.

You have it backwards; you have to assume that they are NOT eligible. Just common sense would dictate that Rubio is a joke as far as eligibility is concerned.

The Naturalization Act of 1790, much quoted, VERY CLEARLY defines natural born as one being born of citizen parents. And, that citizenship descends from the father. This pertains to what the writers of the Constitution had in mind when they inserted the natural born clause into the Constitution. Subsequent naturalization acts do not have the power to amend the Constitution.

It is absurd to think that two Cuban citizen parents in Florida could bequeath natural born United States citizenship status to their child born in Florida. Or, that a Cuban citizen father in Canada could bequeath natural born United States citizenship status to his child born in Canada.

If the offspring are citizens, they are naturalized and therefore not natural born.

Yours (thought you expressed doubt): “So we’re saying that both parents have to be American citizens, in addition to being born on American soil? If that’s the definition, then Obama is ineligible to be president,,,”

That’s correct. (Obama’s daddy was a Kenyan/UK, not an American citizen...)

Ding ding ding! Winner winner chicken dinner!

Hussein Soetoro was safe because he was a RAT. Rubio, if nominated, would only be safe until the general election. Then the RATs would take him out in court.

I do not think you need a judge to rule on a definition.
“natural born” modifies the word Citizen.
After the American revolution, all inhabitants, be they German or British or French, dropped whatever Citizenship they were born with and became American Citizens.
Going forward, these newly minted US Citizens had babies, who if born on US soil, became natural born Citizens!

....The Declaration also referred to the “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” as justification for the Americans’ separation from the British monarchy. Most eighteenth-century Americans believed that nature, the entire universe, was God’s creation.[90] Therefore, he was “Nature’s God.” Everything, including man, was part of the “universal order of things”, which began with God and was pervaded and directed by his providence...

By God’s providence, then, the children of US Citizens were themselves natural born US Citizens.

Of course, people from other countries could travel to the US, renounce their birth Citizenship, and apply to the government for US Citizenship
