Trump asks voters to boycott Apple: 'I think that's a great idea'
Washington Examiner ^ | 19 Feb 16 | GABBY MORRONGIELLO

Donald Trump on Friday urged a roomful of voters to boycott the tech giant Apple so long as its chief executive, Tim Cook, refuses to comply with a court order to assist the FBI with hacking into the cell phone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook.

"First of all Apple better give the security for that phone," the Republican presidential hopeful said during a campaign rally in Pawleys Island, S.C. "What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time they give that security number. How do you like that?"

"I just thought of it," Trump noted, drawing applause.

"Boycott Apple," he repeated.

"Here's the thing, the phone's not even owned by this young thug that killed people," Trump said, claiming that the cell phone used by Farook is instead "owned by the federal government."

The billionaire suggested that Cook "is looking to do a big number... to show how liberal he is."

"We gotta get to the bottom of it, but we're not going to get to the bottom of it unless we use common sense," Trump said. "So I like the idea of boycotting Apple until such time as they give that information – I think that's a great idea."

Cruz On San Bernardino iPhone Question: “Of Course We Should Unlock Their Phones”
Buzzfeed a day ago
A judge ordered Apple on Tuesday to turn over software that would allow the FBI to get around the security features of the cell phone belonging to Syed Farook. And there is probably very good reason for people not trust the government. But we are going to have to get over that because right now we are faced with tremendous threats, and individuals, radical jihadists, that want to destroy us. And we are going to have to weigh these things, one against the other.

Well, I think both Cruz and Trump ought to get on the wavelength that yes, some things can be validly deemed war. But that we ought to be CALLING it war. It’s wrong to deal with war as civil case or crime. Part of the bargain of letting government wage war is calling it so, and by order of Congress. We have various quasi-wars going on because Congress has not wanted to call war, war but some circumlocution. But I believe we DO have some kind of declared hostilities to ISIS.

If this is just civil case or crime, Apple is right.

If this is war, both Cruz and Trump are right in what they want Apple to do.

The FBI is asking Apple to do nothing to remove the privacy features. They are requesting - IN THIS CASE ONLY - to remove the limit on the number of retries. 15 minutes work for a programmer. Once that's done, the FBI can use it's existing tools to crack the password and then decrypt the information on this TERRORISTS PHONE. No different than in the past.

I'd love to see that actual wording of the court order.

I have questions:

I'm assuming this is an operating system modification we're talking about.

If Apple modified the operating system, how would it be loaded on the phone? Is it access to the phone that is password protected, or is it just the data that is encrypted with a password?

Once Apple modifies the operating system to eliminate the 10 strikes and you're out limit, and provides it to the FBI, what is to stop them from keeping/copying the OS and using it whenever they like?

Cruz says they should open that particular phone, but not open up a backdoor for all phones.

Simple answer. Vote Cruz.

BAD ADVICE!

Cruz is UNELECTABLE on the National level.

At best he has small pockets of support.. and South Carolina is NOT one of them.

Exactly. This particular case goes beyond the usual blather about “national security” because it’s not about a suspicion or a hypothetical.

A terror attack occurred and people died. This was an attack on our country by traitors loyal to a foreign power (even if that power is not a formal govt). It’s not just wackos going on a shooting spree.

Also, how can the terrorist’s privacy be violated? He is dead.

Another article says he said that Apple should just open that phone only. I’ll need to look for a direct quote.

I have never said Cruz was right on this issue. I know where I stand. See, I don’t defend everything Cruz has said or done.

This thread is about what Trump said and arguing with those supporting Trump’s stance. The argument of “you guy did, too” is meaningless to someone who does not blindly defend his guy.

It is a great idea to boycott Apple. You can purchase a Freedom 251 Smartphone for 251 Rupees (from India)!

Add 40 Rupees for postage and you are still under $5.00 US.

This would be justified in a war context, but it’s being treated in a crime context.

Even assuming you're right that this would be justified in a war context, the problem is that, if this tool is created, the government would not hesitate to use it in other contexts.

Today, they want to unlock a dead terrorist's phone. Tomorrow, it might be a drug dealer. Or someone suspected of insider trading. Or Ammon Bundy. Or you, or me or anyone reading this.

They want APPLE to do it on that one phone. Both Trump and Cruz do. Neither asked for Apple to put this tool into the public or even the government’s hands.
