It has become increasingly clear that the "self-funded" candidate in the Republican presidential primary, Donald J. Trump, will destroy the GOP's chances to win in November if he is not the nominee. Leftist groups are ecstatic over Trump’s "Bush lied, people died," mantra over the Iraq war. Internet trolls for Vladimir Putin are firmly behind Trump, saying he has the right recipe for accommodating Russia.

How did this happen? Conservatives who should know better went beyond praising his attacks on political correctness to welcoming him as a legitimate conservative candidate for president. Last year, Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union (ACU) and co-founder of Cove Strategies, a lobbying firm, went on MSNBC and was asked by Chris Matthews if Trump is a "plausible president." He said "Yeah. Definitely. Definitely." He also said, "I actually know Donald Trump," in regard to some of the businessman's other controversial comments. Such remarks sent the message to conservatives nationwide that Trump was one of them.
Ironically, Schlapp is the former political director for President George W. Bush, now accused by Trump of lying to get the U.S. into the Iraq War. How well does Schlapp really know Trump?
It seemed to start when the ACU declared Trump "an American patriot" and announced he was addressing the 2013 conference of the ACU-sponsored Conservative Political Action Conference. That same year, his Donald J. Trump Foundation gave $50,000 to the ACU Foundation. The Donald J. Trump Foundation also gave $25,000 to The American Spectator Foundation, the organization responsible for publishing The American Spectator magazine...

Not all of us are going to join the Trumpeteers and become liberal democrats under a new title. I don’t know what banner the Trump movement will end up with, Republican or Conservative, but I won’t be under it. I suspect he’ll gravitate back to the democrats, especially if he doesn’t get the Republican nomination. For years I’ve viewed the Republican party as the path to election for Conservatives. We may end up with a viable Conservative third or fourth party after this debacle.

Trump is more Conservative, instinctively, than most of those who claim to be in the "Conservative Movement." He is admittedly new to the activist phase, and makes some mistakes in explaining his position. But the man is actually very Conservative in his basic orientation. Give him a little time to work out the inconsistencies.

Just look at the comments on this site from Trump supporters about Conservatives. It’s pretty obvious.

I was excited when Cruz entered the race first. He should of taken the opportunity to define the agenda.

I will agree that he picked the wrong line of attack on the gross mistakes of the Bush Administration, in the Near East. But he understands the origins of the present mess. To understand what was wrong with George W.'s understanding of American purpose, see the juxtaposition of Washington's wisdom with the errant folly in the Bush II Second Inaugural Address: Bush/Washington Debate. (Note how truly relevant are the passages from Washington, quoted; how absurd the Bush misuse of the word "freedom"; etc..
Cruz proposed the wall in 2013 several years before Trump said anything about a wall.

Exactly right. Trump is not a Conservative or a “populist”, he’s a big government liberal democrat and an OPPORTUNIST. Trump wins, democrats and big government win. He’s the fox in the hen house, the wolf in sheep’s clothing. Whether or not he wins the republican party is changed, or at least more exposed.
Ted Cruz stood up, and Trump’s supporters treat him like crap for it.

They are already making sure the President doesn’t get to enact a Liberal agenda, and I expect they will continue to do so.

If the GOP and other repukelicans pull their head out of their 3rd point of contact; they would realize that TRUMP is what happens when there is no leadership.
Hey, I’d vote for the guy over any rat, any day, but I will never fully endorse the man. He is a symptom to a much bigger problem.
