The incoming fire appears to have taken a toll in South Carolina, a state that had been seen as favorable territory for Cruz due to its conservative and evangelical bent.
But new polls released this week show Cruz trailing by double digits, with Trump poised for a huge win in the state on Saturday. Wednesday's Monmouth University poll gives Trump 35 percent support, nearly doubling Cruz, who garnered just 19 percent.
Trump's lead extends to the very evangelical community that Cruz had expected to win in large numbers.

Fascists, Frauds, Fools and Fakes.
I love that song and much of her work.
I have already said I’m skipping the ballot line if he’s the nominee. I’m through playing the lemming for RINO candidates.
Trump was lying then, or is he merely lying now? He’s been on every side of most of the hot button issues of our times. He has zero credibility with me, and he always will.
Unlike donnie or his trumpanzees, we believe in honor, morals, character and the truth. Donnie does not know the definition of any of those words nor any of the 10 commandments. I will either not vote or write in Cruz.
Trump is no RINO. Hell, he’s not even a Republican.
Those that aren’t already are well down that road.
God help us.
I heard the news conference was pathetic.
Yes, the dems have their democratic socialist and “we” have our very own budding nationalist socialist to contend with. Oh joy.
Hey. We know that. All of here no that you’re going to sit this one out if Trump is nominee.
You’re a phony just like this Cruz.
Grow up.
Sounds good in theory, but it wouldn't have worked against how Trump has run his campaign.
When he comes out with a statement that there should be a moratorium on Muslims coming to this country for awhile, the press couldn't ignore it. They shouted "Unconstitutional", but then as it was discussed in the world and the country as a whole, it turns out it's something a president probably actually can do.
Trump says Hillary got schlonged, and the media went into an uproar. So the country spent a week or so coming to terms with how political correctness has taken over in our country.
He says Cruz should get that natural born citizenship question squared away, and the media said "Birther!" and Ted tried to ignore it, but Trump kept saying it until people started looking into the question and found out the issue wasn't as clear-cut as Cruz wanted people to believe.
Trump keeps bringing up that he'll build a wall and Mexico will pay for it. He makes it such a campaign plank that the media can't ignore it. For now, it remains to be seen whether he'll get it done or not. What matters now is that he's reminding people that we've been demanding something be done about the uncontrolled illegal immigration at least since the Reagan years, and not a damned thing has been done about it by the politicians the voters keep sending to Washington.
Except when pressed about it in questions on the campaign trail about their response to Trump's latest outrageous statement, the other candidates haven't weighed in on those issues. They've been doing everything they could to try to ignore what Trump is saying. But still Trump is controlling the conversation in this primary season.
But . . . but . . . the Jeb “internal” poll . . . .
Could you try that again in English? Or are you one of dem furrin agitators from Soros we keep hearing about?
I wasn't against Cruz till I started listening to his supporters. You guys are a scary weird bunch very BECK like.
You’re right. The media has to be all over it. Got it. The competing candidates were the ones that were wrong to ignore it.
I am far more anti-Trump than I am pro-Cruz.
Keep posting child. You are doing far more damage to your candidate with your behavior then you could possible realize
This is interesting, but not as much fun as when President Trump starts doing this to Americas enemies, starting with Hillary, and then on to ISIS, Iran, and so forth.
These fights will pale in comparison.
