Cruz unloads on Trump after slipping in South Carolina polls
The Hill ^ | 2/17/2016 | Ben Kamisar

The incoming fire appears to have taken a toll in South Carolina, a state that had been seen as favorable territory for Cruz due to its conservative and evangelical bent.

But new polls released this week show Cruz trailing by double digits, with Trump poised for a huge win in the state on Saturday. Wednesday's Monmouth University poll gives Trump 35 percent support, nearly doubling Cruz, who garnered just 19 percent.

Trump's lead extends to the very evangelical community that Cruz had expected to win in large numbers.

Looks like Ted's desperation is leading to self-destruction. The guy should have taken the high road. He's got almost no chance of beating Trump, and if Cruz WERE to miraculously obtain the nomination, the enemedia would paint Cruz as a fringe candidate who appeals only to extremely fringe ultra-conservative, evangelical right-wingers.

Ted's a young guy and should be playing the long game: looking, listening and learning. Instead Cruz may flame out and never again be a viable national candidate.

Cruz’s mistake was running a campaign of ideolgoical purity in a year when voters are fed up with poltics as usaul.

All the high flying retroic on ideological purity are meaningless to a voter who been underemployed since 2008,is worried if his employer is going to move his job to Mexico tomorrow and whose kids go to a corrupt, incompetent, gang infested school.

People want solutions, not “how many Conservatives can dance on the head of a pin”, ideological debates.

Ted doesn’t get it. Tanking in all demographics and even losing evangelicals to Trump, he goes and finds James Dobson to vouch for him. Ted has marginalized himself to a little corner of the Republican Party. He’s finished.

If he was smart he would have served a term or two and waited until he had actually accomplished something other than make speeches.

Trump is living in his head rent-free. Just look at today - during the critical time just days before a make-or-break primary he’s got Cruz pissing around for an hour with Rove-like charts and whining about frivilous lawsuits. Talk about OFF MESSAGE!

Trump is master of this game. Rattle the opposition, trash talk him, screw with his head...it’s probably put billions of dollars in his pocket on deals, the this primary is just one big fat beautiful deal!

And this is why you are losing. Another infantile snark without a shred of contact with fact. Moronic political tactics to scream in hysteric at people and then expect them to vote FOR your candidate.

Sad how "conservatives" thought adopting the ad homin attack tactics of the Leftist political machine, would work for them

Ted’s going to have bigger issues getting elected in Texas. Some enterprising candidate will come along and claim that Ted lied to the people of Texas when he was still a citizen of Canada. There’s that lie thing again and it will have staying power thanks to this election. Ted may not make it out of the primary in Texas and if he does may not win the general election. Cruz really played this badly and may have ended his political career at the age of 44. Unfortunate.

What you don’t understand is that many voters such as myself do believe that Trump has fascist tendencies. That is why if Cruz loses I will throw my support to Rubio to try and stop Trump. Trump and his supporters honestly make me fear for the survival of my freedoms.

Cruz was successful in Texas because he was running in the U.S. Senate race against the preferred candidate of the Lone Star branch of the GOP-e, David Dewhurst, in a state with a large conservative constituency. On a national stage, this tactic may have worked against the likes of Rubio, Kasich, and Jeb Bush. But Trump is an unforeseen player, reminiscent of Ross Perot or George Wallace in his nationalism and populism, but within the Republican Party. Cruz has not developed an effective game plan other than getting into the dirt with Trump. Reagan never did this against his 1980 primary opponents, nor to Jimmy Carter. Cruz did not do this in his Texas career.

“Cruz’s mistake was running a campaign of ideolgoical purity in a year when voters are fed up with poltics as usual.”

I’ve been thinking about why Ted is self-destructing and my conclusion is that Ted started his Presidential run well before Trump was a factor and was unable to pivot to a different, longer term strategy when Trump came in and totally blew up the entire political scene.

I think Ted had it all calculated out about how he could beat a big field of split RINOs, and then Trump came in and beat him at his own game, and Ted simply could not accept temporary defeat and live to fight again on another day.

Extreme economic nationalism, demonization of outsiders, cult of personality rallies, mistresses, theatrical bombast. I know interwar Italian style fascism when I see it.

Months of seeing and hearing crap like this has driven who knows how many thousands of undecided Republicans to Trump's banner. You're doing our work for us. Thanks.

That’s why we need a small government conservative like Cruz who will fight to restore the Constitution and our freedoms. Not a strongman like Trump who will eliminate our freedoms forever.
