LEXINGTON, Va. -- A gymnasium full of college students here on Saturday did what a former Republican Party chairman, a former vice president and a former speaker of the House who addressed their mock convention would not: predict the Republican nominee for president.
And they did so with bravado, perhaps characteristic of their nominee, predicting that Donald J. Trump, the business tycoon who has never held elected office, would win the Republican nomination with more than twice as many delegates as the runner-up, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.
For a political culture awash with polls and punditry, the mock convention at Washington and Lee University offers one of the most meticulous and intriguing predictions of its kind, having successfully forecast the nominee of the party not in the White House in 19 of 25 attempts, including all but two since 1948.
Despite the convention's decisive outcome, its political analysts said they had not been immune to the difficulty posed by the breakdown in traditional Republican voting patterns seen in the campaign so far.

Excellent news. Go Trump!
Kids are smart nowadays.
If so, then Hillary will be president, the Supreme Court is hers, and the USA is over.
Might as well just crown Trump now if that is the case. His petulance and shouting at the debate was telling and I think his temperament will be more and more of an issue.
Further, we still have several GOPe candidates splitting the Trump/Cruz opposition vote and so none of them are getting close. Yet they are doing well enough (Rubio; Jebbie; Kasich) to stay in the race for a while.
Why, are you going to stay home?
Donald Trump is the Republican front runner Month over Month, but everywhere he goes, he walks into a hostile environment.
Trump wins points with us hard working peons at home when he exposes how the RNC and liberal/media moderators have done everything they can to stack the audience and questions against him.
Trump holds his own in a live television situation and wins, debate after debate. Trump is exposing how these live debates are rigged against him.
NEVER has a Republican front runner been treated the way Trump has by his own party and it is disgusting for viewers to watch. Disgusting.
Trump has the highest negatives of any candidate. You can’t overcome that.
As a result, almost all polls show Trump -— and only Trump among the Republicans — losing to Hillary.
I don’t care if you like Trump or not. I do care about the USA. And Trump will lose big in the general.
Trump will likely win New York in the general election.
Trump will Definetly win Florida over Clinton. Trump will also win Ohio, Penn and Michigan over Clinton.
New York and Florida east coast time. He will also win New Hampshire over Clinton.
Anyone who says Trump will not win in the general is flat wrong.
Cruz will not win New York. Cruz will likely not win Florida in the general.
I also worry that he will be as autocratic as Zero.
“I am seeing it that way too. Trump put himself out front early by taking the most conservative positions and he hasn’t looked back.”
Bwahahahahahahahaha. Donald Trump. Famous Conservative.
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Trump has made a sport of doing things they say can't be done.
Besides, Hillary's negatives only beat Trump's by one point, but you don't see anyone bemoaning her chances.
Trump will likely win the Republican Primary. And Trump vs Clinton will be MUST SEE TV for the debates.
Hillary will be exposed on live TV. Ratings will be through the roof and Trump will win.
In 1980, Reagan had a lot of doubters. Many felt we would be better off with somebody more establishment like George Bush, Bob Dole or John Anderson.
“In 1980, Reagan had a lot of doubters. Many felt we would be better off with somebody more establishment like George Bush, Bob Dole or John Anderson.”
True. Do you think RR would have defended PP on a debate stage like Trump did last debate? And continue to do so? No? Me either. You are comparing apples and armadillos, man.
“Trump has made a sport of doing things they say can’t be done.”
List a few.
I remember Reagan speaking on behalf of ERA in 1980. It didn’t amount to much after he was elected. Just pandering a bit for votes.
Go Trump!
Lord don’t let this thing be Trump, Sanders
