No, I thought so too. That guy was pretty dirty too. This is a different John Poindexter.

Don’t know who arranged it, but the LA Slimes article says “he was so unassuming” -— hey, the marshals are not your snobby entourage, they are there to protect you.

If, if, if, someone wanted to do him harm, this was a set up so perfect a scriptwriter would refuse to use it as too obvious.

Yeah, most states do have that law .. it’s an automatic autopsy if the person died alone.

I too am surprised that TX would not have that law. And, if it was law, the family would have no say in the matter.

With no autopsy; there will always be a doubt in my mind.

The John Poindexter to whom you refer is still living and the same age as Justice Scalia, both born in 1936. He is a Hoosier. This John Poindexter who found Justice Scalia is from Marfa, TX: not the same one.

Last year I went the hospital to see a relative who had been dead an hour. He was cold but the sheets were smooth, his eyes were closed and his mouth was open and I saw gasses escape his mouth. For a split second I hoped that was breath but no. Rigor had set in. He did not look like he was asleep. It was clear that his soul was gone but I loved him and knew what he looked like. A stranger might have looked in and thought he was napping. Since his doctors were struggling to save his life when his heart gave out I’d say he must have been in distress.

I had heard a report that said he wasn't feeling well the night before.

Interesting that this lengthy article made no mention of Scalia not feeling well.

The host said he had no apparent pain or distress in his death. I am guessing that he made that assumption from the peaceful manner in which he found Scalia ...

That’s how James Madison died. At the age of 85, he lay down for his traditional Sunday afternoon nap, and he never woke up.

Other articles I have read said he retired at 9:00 pm because he was feeling “tired.”

Thanks for that post. Very informative. It would be interesting to hear from others who have been in similar situations as yours.

‘He was in perfect repose ... as if he was taking a nap’

So was George A. Custer when they found him according to General Edward Godfrey....

And in ALL of those sudden attacks there is a great deal of pain

Not true at all - some in pain, some not. I know personally of a couple of them who just died. One said "I feel dizzy." and then collapsed according to his wife, and another who simply died in his sleep and it was discovered that he was dead when his wife couldn't wake him up the next morning. My grandfather also took a nap in his chair and was found dead in the chair, although I don't know if it was a heart attack - probably was though. Moral of the story don't spread bullshit and don't make up lies. That makes you no better than a liberal.

When I was 8 years old my Father died in his sleep from a heart attack. My Mother said that he looked normal & peaceful, just as if he were sleeping. He was 48 when he died.

Now, though, when I look back, it shouldn’t have been a shock. He smoked, drank & never went to the doctor. Didn’t take care of himself at all.

OTOH I have seen congestive heart failure put someone down peacefully 'to' sleep ...

I went to thousands of people over the years who were suffering from congestive heart failure. They tend to be regular callers in the months before they die. So we get to know them. They definitely look more peaceful when they are dead than when they are gasping for air. They finally get so exhausted that they can't go on and die. It is one of the most awful ways to go. CHFRs don't go down peacefully unless they have been given a bunch of drugs by someone who took pity on them.

People who attend to dead people try to make them look more "peaceful" for the sake of the relatives. Most of the time they just don't look that way without a little help or heavy duty drugs.

I should probably clarify my experiences. Sometimes death comes so quickly, especially from something like a massive stroke or aneurysm, or an aortic aneurysm that people don't have a chance to express or probably experience a lot of pain. When the flow of oxygen suddenly stops getting to the brain one loses consciousness quickly. But they still don't generally look like they went peacefully until someone does a little staging for the benefit of their loved ones.

When you say someone died from a “heart attack” that is understood to mean that they died because the flow of blood quit getting to the heart muscles. That is an extremely painful process during the time that the heart muscle is starving for oxygen. While the victim is still conscious they are experiencing pain... a lot of it until they lose consciousness.p>

I have performed CPR on little old brittle people where it felt like every bone in their chest broke. They were unconscious and I always hope that they are not feeling pain from what we were doing to try and save their life. We like to think that when someone is unconscious they are not experiencing pain. The problem is that some people who appear to be unconscious and unresponsive actually are still experiencing pain. We know this because some people who survive are able to describe the pain that they went through.

What you are describing as pain free death is really where someone lost circulation to their brain suddenly and lost consciousness quickly. That is the most “peaceful” way to die. Unfortunately, in my experience that is not the way that most people die from heart failure. Usually it looks like there was a struggle to survive. And even if they weren't able to alert anyone no one knows whether they were in pain or not. We all tell the relatives they weren't for the benefit of the relatives.

No offense to your mom, but we’re talking about a SC Justice that was probably the deciding vote in court cases suppose to come out in June and he was suppose to write a few decisions, meaning they were likely 5-4 using his conservative logic. They concerned religious liberty and executive power. I understand you saying an autopsy isn’t required in Texas but I think it would be important in this case.
