Can they? Yes.

Will they? Probably not.

Chuck Gressley just echoed McConnells’ remark. But while they are at it, they should slow walk all of Obama’ s choices at every level.

Only if they have the political will and flex their political muscle.

They don’t and they won’t.

Nightmare scenario,

114th congress (current) manages to block any nomination for the rest of its term.

115th congress meets Jan. 3, 2017 and Democrats somehow gain control of Senate from Republicans.
Obama is still president until Jan. 20th, 2017. In that short time frame, Senate confirms Obama's pick.

“...there has never been a greater reason for a Republican majority in Congress then for this matter.”

Exactly.

“They’re going to ban then confiscate. After flooding our borders with refugees and third worlders. Wonder how many gun owners voted Dem because their priest or liberal pastor told them to.”

The best argument I have found to counter the liberal priests and pastors is to bring up the parable of the Good Samaritan. The Samaritan did NOT bring the unknown man into his house. He rented a room at a hotel for him.

Even worse nightmare... Sanders or some other socialist wins the presidency.

Unfortunately, there is zero evidence to indicate that they’ll do anything but that. Ugh.

Let us hope so. The bad news being the Republicans are notorious for being unable to resist the negro community organizer from Chicago.

Perhaps the good Lord has finally abandoned America as we have become the killers of infants, adulterers, sodomites, gluttons, liars and drunken druggies.

We have experienced disaster after disaster in things foreign and domestic-now we have lost Scalia and have a leftists pig in the White House.

You said “let us pray.” I fear God has abandoned America as a once moral religious people have become pigs.

Worse case... Obama recess appoints between the 114th and 115th Congresses. That appointment will stand until the end of 2017 (the end of the first session), when the Justice must step down. The new President then then get to pick his nominee.

Given that scenario, would Obama still choose to throw the court into disarray for a year with a futile gesture? Who would want to go down in history as Obama's middle-finger benchwarmer for a year? Or do Democrats think they will have a year to persuade the next President to permanently appoint Obama's recess pick?

There is no mechanism for a recess appointment to the Supreme court so please stop trying to say there is.

George Washington appointed South Carolina judge John Rutledge as Chief Justice of the United States during a congressional recess in 1795. Rutledge was already an Associate Justice.

New Jersey judge William J. Brennan was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 through a recess appointment. This was done in part with an eye on the presidential campaign that year; Eisenhower was running for reelection, and his advisors thought it would be politically advantageous to place a northeastern Catholic on the court. Brennan was promptly confirmed when the Senate came back into session.

Stack the Supreme Court like Roosevelt wanted to do.
Congress can change the number of justices on the Supreme Court without a Constitutional amendment. They did it several times in the 1800’s. Maybe it’s time they at least doubled the Court to 18. With more members, it wouldn’t be so dependent on one member to tip it this way or that.

We’ll see. The republicans control the Senate and can stall any nomination and if Obama wants to override them he need’s a super majority meaning at least 12 republicans need to support his choice. McConnell, McCain, Hatch, Susan Collins, Bob Corker, Mark Kirk, Cory Gardner and Kelly Ayotte give him a good start at dumping on America.
