Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) echoed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) calls to wait for a new president to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by Justice Antonin Scalia.
In a statement Saturday night, Grassley said it's been standard practice over the last 80 years not to confirm a Supreme Court nominee during a presidential election year.
"Given the huge divide in the country, and the fact that this President, above all others, has made no bones about his goal to use the courts to circumvent Congress and push through his own agenda, it only makes sense that we defer to the American people who will elect a new president to select the next Supreme Court Justice," he said.
Grassley's statement falls in line with that of McConnell, who said Scalia should not be replaced until after the 2016 presidential election.
"The American peopleâ should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice," he said in a statement.
In his remarks, Grassley called Scalia, who died Saturday at the age of 79, "an intellectual giant."
"He had an unwavering dedication to the founding document that has guided our country for nearly 230 years," he said of Scalia's interpretation of the Constitution. "His humor, devotion to the Constitution and quick wit will be remembered for years to come."
One can only hope, unfortunately, this Congress has not impressed me with their will or desire to protect the Constitution. They will cave as usual.
No one on the SCOTUS can match the intellect we have lost. McConnell better not budge an inch on his decision not to confirm anyone in this president’s term. The Democrat media will have a cow, but standing firm against their caterwauling is essential to the future of this nation and its freedom.
Here is a better statement by Sen. Grassley.
This is good. Grassley is in a position to never let any nomination out of committee.
I wish these words would remove this nauseous feeling in my stomach.
Actions speak louder than words.
The ball is in Grassleys court.
GOP senator [Graham]: Obama’s SCOTUS nominee must be a ‘consensus’ choice http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3396735/posts
Steve King needs to threaten to primary him anyway.
It’s not going to happen.
Grassley is doing the right thing
Tell Obama his line
Elections have consequences
This our only hope. McConnell has said the same thing as well. Lets see if these GOPe bitches hold their ground.
Loretta Lynch.
She’s already been “pre-approved” for SCOTUS by this Congress.
Thanks. Much better ;-)
Good for McConnell and Grassley. We have to have their backs on this. The Republic is at stake.
I is tilted as of today in favor of the Left Wing commies, could only get worse.
Try not to be so pessimistic. Maybe this time they’ll hold firm. McCain will betray them, of course, but maybe he won’t be enough (I hope).
You think people should go down to Washington so they won’t be wobbly?
This is a time where we should storm them to NOT act.
I thought so too.
