ROCK HILL, S.C. - With South Carolina's Republican primary just about a week away, the stakes are high for all candidates.
In an exclusive interview with NBC Charlotte's Rad Berky, Ted Cruz said he is appealing to more than just evangelicals who will make up more than 50-percent of the Republican electorate in the February 20 primary.
"I'll tell you, what we are seeing is the old Reagan coalition coming together," Cruz said.
Cruz finished strong in Iowa with evangelicals, but said he has support across the board.
"We won conservatives," Cruz said. "We also won evangelicals and we won Reagan democrats, and we also won young people."
While Cruz captured Iowa, Donald Trump had a big win in New Hampshire. This sets the stage in South Carolina, where the winner will have momentum on their side.
"I think more and more this is becoming a two man race between me and Donald Trump," Cruz explained.
Cruz believes Trump beat him in New Hampshire because even Republican conservatives are more liberal in that state. In South Carolina, Cruz believes his so-called Reagan coalition and frustration with Washington will be enough for him to win.
"I think people are tired of what I call 'campaign conservatives.' They talk a good game, but haven't walked the walk," Cruz said. "The reason that conservatives are uniting behind my campaign is because I have been a consistent fiscal conservative, a social conservative, and a national security conservative."

He can claim anything he wants. The polls show otherwise. It is Trump who is expanding the base including Reagan Democrats. It is Cruz who is dissing the voters in NY and NH. GO TRUMP GO
Is that including the 16% that Trump is ahead by in SC?

Cruz has a habit of lying. Trump has called it on him a few times.
I would say this demonstrates that the Reagan coalition has shrunk.
A lot of us have died off. Young skulls o’ mush come out of college as Bernie Liberals. And a wide swath in the middle has given up on Reaganomics because the Republicans in power since Reagan have perverted it, and too many voters now think it’s a crony scam.
I think he’s probably right. Trump was at 44% today, so it has to be coming from somewhere.
In the days when Bill Cosby is accused of rape, queers can legally marry, nearly 100 million American aren’t in the workforce, and Bruce Jenner is the Woman of the year, Cruz needs to wise up to the fact that it’s not Reagan’s American anymore, and he ain’t the one putting the coalition together.
Ted’s right about this; he’s just not the one who’s bringing the old Reagan coalition back together.
Trump’s doing that, plus with the potential to win more votes of black Americans than any Republican in decades.
OK Ted, let’s make it a two man race.
Then why does Cruz poll better against Hillary than Trump in every poll?

“Not only was Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump victorious in the New Hampshire Republican primary election Tuesday, he was also the candidate most heavily favored by self-identified evangelical voters.”
700 Club was sure pushing TC in their opening “news” segment today.
Of course, they also are the guys who were pushing a book by “conservative authors” including ... wait for it ... Michael Steele.
He can dream...
I was a Reagan supporter, as were most of my friends and colleagues... Not one of us are for Cruz. He uses his “Christianity” as a cover for his unchristian like behavior. It gets old and more apparent as time goes by.
Texans for Trump!
Yeah and that with 20 percent won’t get you that far.
Trump 2016.
Abortion has become more unpopular since Reagan’s era. The libertarian, small-government movement has also risen since then. Our military is viewed much more positively now than they were in the post-Vietnam era.
Same-sex marriage is a change for the worse, but it was forced on us by the courts. The majority of people didn’t want it.
Cruz can only win when evangelicals run the process from end to end. There is no more silent Moral Majority. Hell, Falwell’s son endorsed Trump.
The old Reagan coalition included a lot of blue collar dems. Working class folks. They are supporting Trump
Probably for the same reasons Carter lead Reagan by 30 percentage points and more at the same point in 1980. People aren't really focusing on general election match-ups and giving serious consideration to policy differences at this point.
What Really Happened in the 1980 Presidential Campaign
According to your thinking, Reagan should have been dropped from consideration during early 1980.
Cruz doesn’t engage in “un-Christian-like” behavior.
I can’t think of anything more un-Christian-like than cheating on your wife and writing in two books bragging about sleeping with other people’s wives. Or thinking partial-birth-abortion is okay when you’re in your 50s and telling Stern your opinion could change to be in favor of same-sex marriage. So don’t talk to me about which candidate is un-Christian-like.
Yeah, the Reaganites always did have a soft spot for candidates that got gutsy after someone else shows it’s safe....
