Although the decision to inform a workforce of 1,400 employees that they'll soon be losing their jobs to Mexico is an admirable one from the standpoint of candor, it hardly makes for a good recipe for workplace morale.

A cell phone video taken at Carrier Air Conditioner in Indianapolis shows the exact moment that the plant and union workers were told that the company had decided to shift production south of the border.

"The best way to stay competitive and protect the business for longterm is to move production from our facility in Indianapolis to Monterrey, Mexico," says the company representative at the microphone.

Although the change would not take effect until 2017, the reactions from the gathered restless crowd were telling.

Sorry to disagree, but tariffs are bad for the countries that impose them. Somewhat equivalent to a backdoor devaluation of currency.

In addition to the commercial/retail businesses supported by the paychecks of the factory workers, I would guess that there are many area companies that supply parts and shipping, etc., directly to the Carrier facility. All these businesses will be affected - some to the point of closure, thus further impacting the day-to-day trade in the area’s secondary retail stores.

****the first “transition” will start in the middle of 2017. WELL YEAH BUT ONLY IF TRUMP’S NOT ELECTED!!!****

Maybe Carrier sees the writing on the wall and is getting a front row seat to the negotiations.

Construction is not manufacturing. You are mixing apples and oranges. Trump made money in real estate and construction no importing junk form overseas. Get real.

Trump sent American dollars overseas which resulted in jobs and wealth overseas.

Carrier is sending jobs overseas which is creating jobs and wealth overseas.

In the end there is no difference.

higher cost of doing business in America

Everything becomes moot if this country does not have a viable economy by means of a middle class. There simply has not been free trade - all that has happened is that companies have moved out and have shipped their goods into this country tax free. That is the worse case scenario because where do our citizens work.

Everybody seems to forget that. All the other countries seem to protect their workforce but we haven't cared for a generation. And, goods haven't been any cheaper: IPhones made in china by peasants living on gruel cost a fortune and so do the the fancy athletic shoes - hey, about those $100 dollar Polo shirts.

If we don't start to protect our jobs by increasing the cost of doing business out of the country - along with tax and regulation reduction - we are going down the drain. (Oh, and secure the freakin' border.)

No he imports the Polish workers and pays them below market wages without the required safety gear.

Both are taking money and JOBS out of the USA. At least Carrier is making something that might actually be used by Americans.

I’m surprised Carrier took so long to make this move. Manufacturing has been pushed overseas for so long.

I wonder if this was a ploy to manipulate the Union into accepting concessions it might not otherwise accept.

In the end there is no difference.

Your an idiot. There is no labor arbitrage if Trump uses money to build a hotel overseas with local labor.

Stupidity like yours is why we will have President Trump. Keep tapping away at the keyboard son ya doin' good.

So if Trump builds a building in China that money creates jobs in America? Verses him creating a building in America?

You’re an ass.

” it doesn€™t take a $40 an hour worker to put air conditioning units together”

No it doesn't but telling a group of workers your job is on borrowed time then returning them to the work floor to continue to produce their product is foolish and is asking for trouble.
