Although the decision to inform a workforce of 1,400 employees that they'll soon be losing their jobs to Mexico is an admirable one from the standpoint of candor, it hardly makes for a good recipe for workplace morale.
A cell phone video taken at Carrier Air Conditioner in Indianapolis shows the exact moment that the plant and union workers were told that the company had decided to shift production south of the border.
"The best way to stay competitive and protect the business for longterm is to move production from our facility in Indianapolis to Monterrey, Mexico," says the company representative at the microphone.
Although the change would not take effect until 2017, the reactions from the gathered restless crowd were telling.

Me too. Dead towns from factories that left are beyond depressing.
Won’t buy a Carrier product as long as it is made in Mexico.
Another example: I needed a new engine for my 1 ton truck. Could buy one at GM dealership-—made in Mexico-—for $5500. Paid a well known performance engine builder $6700 instead.
So you protest those companies sending their operations overseas.
But you’re ok when Trump does it.
got it
How much does Trump pay his shills?
Union hasn’t done a damn thing for wages in the grocery business, EVERYONE makes 10 cents above minimum wage!!!
Well, perhaps we can borrow billions of $$$ from China to purchase military gear from China and politely ask them not to place back doors within the processors/support chips....wait....that's if we're not at war with China.
Oh gosh, this is all so confusing.
Glad I’m not buying a Carrier HVAC system anytime soon.
We are the 13th largest city in the nation. But that’s a secret. Don’t tell anyone, they might investigate and move here.
I lived in CA for a few years. Not once, not twice, but on 3 different occasions, when I told someone where I was from, they responded, “Oh, from the east coast?” They were native Californians. I thought it must be a subtle inside insult from them. To my surprise, they didn’t understand what constituted the “Midwest”. This is what they think of “flyover country”.
Trump is in the hospitality industry, his businesses are hotels and golf courses!!!
They were #2 on the list and IIRC, the only manufacturer that still made their products here in the U.S. Well, not anymore they won't.
Feel badly for those losing their jobs. The reality is Carrier DOES NOT HAVE TO move those jobs to remain competitive, what needs to happen is the special tax breaks that are given to those companies who DO move out of the U.S. need to end so those jobs move back here.
Moving a manufacturing plan to Mexico is NOT an export.
You are sure correct on this one !!!! I would stay far away from this brand!!!
Gee here I thought he had a couple TV shows too.
Thats right, hes a reality TV star.
You make no sense whatsoever. And you apparently cannot distinguish between a question and a statement. I protested nothing
You have posted one of the dumbest series of responses I’ve ever read on FR.
I remember reading an article about Italian manufacturers who would wait until the month long vacation everyone in Italy takes then pack up the entire factory and move it to Eastern Europe in the middle of the night. They know if they tell the employees what’s coming they’ll rob the place blind.
It's VERY difficult to keep quiet in a large company when you have to have the cooperation from management at the plant that is closing. There is a lot of planning and data that must be put together to move/build operations at a new location. It can be much worse if the rumors grow out of control. My bet is that the rumors had already started and many folks knew it was coming (Managers, accountants, engineers, etc.). They talk too. I imagine the company wanted to get ahead of the media and manage the PR damage before they were asked about it.
Sorry, poor analysis from Cato, the high priests of globalism and ending nationalism is America. Neat trick though to try to make the founders as hating tariffs and to make being conservative mean you need to open the borders for anything a business demands.
Our nation used tariffs from the very beginning. The are adequate to fund a government. They are poor for funding endless foreign wars and a welfare state.
Starve the beast.
The most important aspect of the American economy are stock prices and executive compensation.
After all, NAFTA is "free trade" and "freedom" and "Constitution" and all that.
That stuff is good for us.
We need President Trump - NOW!
My moonlighting computer guy (five kids) had a great computer-related job here in the Sunshine State till he not only got laid off, but had to first train his replacement...ta dum.... WHO WAS IN EGYPT!
