A bipartisan group of four congressmen introduced a bill Thursday that would abolish the Selective Service System, more commonly known as the draft.
"Maintaining the Selective Service simply makes no sense," Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.), a former Marine, said in a written statement. "In 1973, the last draftee entered the Army and since then, despite the first Gulf War and subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Pentagon has never considered reinstituting the draft. Our all-volunteer military has given us the most elite fighting force in the history of this country."
Coffman introduced the bill with Reps. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), Jared Polis (D-Colo.) and Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.).
The proposal comes at a time when some are calling for an expansion of the draft to include women because all combat jobs are now open to them.
A pair of House Republicans introduced a bill last week that would require women to register for the draft....

Best solution to eliminate the draft women issue.
Yeah there is a whole lot of anachronistic parts of the Government like this that needs to be phased out. Mass conscript armies are a thing of the past.
Don’t we actually have to start the draft first?
Disagree. Selective Service should stay. Women on the other hand don’t belong in Combat roles.
I was a draft board member during Desert Storm. We came **this** close to drafting physicians.

We could do like Rome. Just hire outsiders to defend the place. What are the Huns doing these days?
Jimmy Carter reinstated Selective Service after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan.

Due in the 1% possibility that we might some time in 50 -100 years from now need a coscripted army we should continue to spend money to maintain said system “just in case”?
Cost for the Government to maintain the system since 1973 is greater then it would to set up a system from scratch with modern technology.
Red Dawn.
Is what we have really "the draft," or just registration for a draft that we don't actually have.
Reagan ran on doing this in 1980.
He criticized it as a waste of taxpayer’s money.
Particularly when speaking to young people.
Two months after inauguration he sent Ed Meese out there to read a canned statement that they would not be doing this.
Perhaps the lone dishonest thing I recall him doing.
Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama will now have a cow.
Yes, of course. We haven’t drafted anyone since 1973.
There are no circumstances under which we’ll ever actually start a draft, it just has too bad a name with the people, so there’s no reason to have the registration. And really, if something incredibly outside the realm of expectations happened and we really wanted a draft we could reboot one from scratch in months without even needed a registration process. With as heavily tracked as we are with soc-secs and drivers license we could easily feed that data into a draft system. Selective service registration is stupid, it costs money and we’ll never get anything from it.
Chopping off people's heads in the Middle East and Central American.
Reality sometimes rears its head on campaign promises. I had to register after serving two enlistments.
Allowing their leaders to give them a fatal injection of multiculturalism.
