Saying that he does't trust businessman Donald Trump ideologically, Viguerie added: "Cruz is the best candidate I've seen since Ronald Reagan and in many ways he's more ideologically consistent than Reagan." His feeling is that with the establishment currently divided across several candidates, Cruz can to rally not just conservatives, but the entire GOP. Viguerie said the GOP hasn't been fully united since 1988 and "only Cruz has potential to unite the party." ...

In previous primary contests on FR, things were a bit different. The people pushing the eventual “establishment” candidates often got purged, and the rest of us, who may have favored different candidates, were generally united when it came to opposing the “establishment” guy who eventually ended up with the nomination.
Sure, we begrudgingly pulled together to support the nominee (most of us anyway), but we didn’t have a contingent of FReepers who won lording it over a contingent who lost, we were all losers trying to make the best of our losing hand together. I’m not sure things will follow the same dynamic in this circumstance.
“Get your story straight...Trump did not call anyone that...A woman in the crowd did it...”
Ahh, yet he felt the need to repeat it for millions to hear. Thanks for clearing that up for me. That’s exactly what i want my kids listening to when watching Presidential candidates give speeches.
So says Cruz’s big donor.
So, basically the same as the stories Dubya told about praying and hearing a calling to run for President.
Big whup. Unless you’re a radical atheist or something.
Trump won Independents in NH< and he’s going to win them in every open primary state.... So, what does that tell you about your likability? If Trump is such a liberal as many want to claim, tell me, why is he the most hated by Democrats?
This sort of argument is nonsense... You think numbers aren’t fluid? You think if it comes down to 1 on 1 Trump V Clinton in 9 months from now, that these numbers are going to be the same? Back whenever it was he announced, he was considered a punchline... he just won NH huge, and is on track to win SC big as well...
You really think Hillary or Bernie can beat Trump because some survey tells you something like this? Then you have ZERO understanding of human nature. You put Trump in the same room as Hillary any day of the week and Hillary is overshadowed every single time. There was only one other player in this race that had the X factor besides Trump, and that was Christie, and he’s out.
Trump negatives, trumps negatives, trumps negatives.. this is like listening to Rubio folks trying to make this argument. They fail to understand just how dynamic Trump is in person and on TV... Based on your chart there, Carson and Cruz should be owning the primary season.... yet, Carson is pretty much done, and Cruz only polls on top in TX and only by about a handful of points.
Not only will he not win, but he can’t be trusted on his campaign promises because he has no record to back them up. I might risk my vote on an unkown for some local office, but I will not risk my vote on a candidate with no conservative track record in a presidential primary. No way, Jose.
Ted Cruz has racked up a 97%-100% conservative/pro-liberty voting record...and he’s a front runner. Are you kidding me...this should be a no-brainer for all sentient conservatives.
You’re quite welcome.....
Good point. It it also worth noting that the home run king Babe Ruth was also a strikeout king.
BTW, how old are your kids?
They probably have heard a lot worse in school...
“They probably have heard a lot worse in school...”
Oh, so that makes it ok. Gotcha.
And then there is this:
Trump will build the Wall and you will walk into it and blame it on some alternate reality. Trump would be as conservative as the Pope is Catholic but without his pragmatic ability, he could do nothing. His record of pragmatism combined with his born-again conservatism will zealously build that shining city on the hill that Ronald Reagan showed us. And The Donald has a zeal to build things.
This is an older poll, but I don’t see it getting much better.
Let’s be honest, Trump gets the “Angry White Folk” vote, but how angry, and for how long?
Will it be enough to win a National election?
Maybe, but I wouldn’t bank on this 100%.
That will remain to be seen.
I am not thrilled about things they way they are, either, but I have to think long term.
Small government, constitutional conservatism is the only way to stop the train wreck.
Big Government Conservatism will not work any better than Big Government Liberalism is now.
Federal Government takes 1/6 of the money now, and borrows what it doesn’t have. that is 1/6 of OUR money that doesn’t create jobs, raises, savings, entrepreneurs, etc.
Trump just doesn’t strike me as a small Government Conservative.
Sorry, not bashing him, it is just how I see things.
I would vote for Trump if he wins the nomination, but I prefer Cruz.
Very true.
Reagan did not win 45 and 49 states and go over 60% of the popular vote because he was an ideologically consistent conservative.
He did that because he was an American nationalist who got on well with his Democratic rivals, and was beloved by ordinary working Americans.
For the last time we ran someone more ideologically consistent than Ronald Reagan and the predictable results, google "Barry Goldwater".
And let’s not forget that the RCP head to head average has Trump losing to Hitlery and Sanders right out of the box!
Seems we’ve heard this before...
“Trump will build the Wall”
If he gets that far. I sure hope he does do that.
LOL...Didn’t say it was OK...It’s just life...
You going to lock them away in your house so their ears wont get offended outside in the real world?
Bigger picture next time sir.
“Based on your chart there, Carson and Cruz should be owning the primary season.”
Hello? It’s a chart of ALL voters, not REPUBLICAN voters. If you want to speculate as to how the primary may shape up, you look at republican voters, if you want to speculate about the general you look at all voters.
