POLICE ARE crediting a vigilant gun owner with saving the life of an Upper Darby cop Friday after he saw the officer being attacked and surrounded by a large group of teens.

"There were 40 kids. If it wasn't for the good Samaritan stepping forward, he'd have been dead meat," Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. "There's no doubt they would have attacked him."

About 3 p.m. every weekday, from six to eight township police officers patrol the area near Upper Darby High School as nearly 4,000 kids pour out of the building on Lansdowne Avenue near School Lane.

For crowd control, perhaps 12 gauge, 3”, rifled barrel, extended magazine, and #4 buckshot. 440 projectiles in 5 seconds in a 6’ pattern at 20 yards would be very effective

Probably because he did not want to deal w/ threats to his family, riots, being tried by the feds, etc...........it is a no win situation anymore. At what point will people stop going into LE & education? Two professions that don’t even resemble what they used to be.

Hopefully that would be sufficient against somewhat "unmotivated" urban youths who might realize it is wiser to run away than stick around to fight.

“That said, how long before the Good Samaritan is charged with a crime, sued, loses his job, or is otherwise negatively impacted over this episode?”

Exactly what I was thinking. This sounds like a very “progressive” burb of Phillie. No eager commie D.A. to charge the good samaritan with Brandishing? What am I missing here?

Here in our contemporary times it is likely I would draw a weapon to protect only myself or my family...all things considered.

I understand the capitol expenses involved, but 4000 in one school is way too many. USNA has only slightly more than that at a given time...and we had Marine guards!

The clue is in the article. The officer was surrounded by “Teens”.

He would have needed an AR with the full 31 rounds, and maybe a pistol too. He was surrounded by a group of 40 “Teens”.

“Who says it wasn’t a black homeowner that saved the cop? (I didn’t read the whole article, so excuse me if I’m wrong.)”

So how does that figure in to my question? It does not really matter about the race of the man who inerceded, because he was not the one posing the threat. Also, as recent history has shown, when Blacks commit crimes, the media and/or the government usually acts to protect those who are the perpetrators. It’s not right, but it’s the truth. I for one am tired of anyone guilty of criminal activty irrespective of their ethnicity getting a pass on the public knowing who they are. And I am really tired of protecting “utes” who are in all respects acting like adults in the acts of violence they commit. In a decent world ANY citizen who has the means to do so, needs to step forward and help the cops.

Second, why did the “kids” listen to an armed home owner and not an armed cop.

If the kids were black, they probably know the cops are currently in retreat. Especially if the cop was white and the kids and homeowner black, then the kids probably took the threat of the homeowner more seriously because they knew that, unlike the cop, he wouldn't hesitate due to fears of being picketed and harassed by the BLM crew.

Once you start pulling the trigger most of the rest will run. Shoot the ones who stay.

A friend that lives in SE Pennsylvania describes the high schools as similar to mega-churches; towns have their own elementary schools but share huge high schools. Western NJ has this as well; I guess it is for economies of scale.
