John Kasich? Tending in New Hampshire? Is that true? And if so, how does this clarify or cloud the crystal ball?
The graph in that tweet is confusing. Another way to look at it is over a longer time period. On Google's proprietary scale of search interest, which runs from 0 to 100, this is how the post-Iowa search traffic in New Hampshire has looked for the five Republicans doing best in the polls. (We're mostly only interested in the candidate who will come in second, since we assume Trump will win easily.)
In the past day or so, Kasich has surged past the other four.
Over the past few hours, he's run about even in search interest with Cruz and Trump. This is from a guy who nationally polls sixth but was working hard in the Granite State.

They didn't vote for McCain because of his foreign policy -- which may be one reason why Kasich is set to outpoll Rubio and Christie.
You can check the maps tomorrow. Republicans in Southern New Hampshire are voting against Massachusetts liberalism and tend to be more ideological than those in the central part of the state who tend to be hereditary Republicans of the old sort who are less likely to vote for ideological reasons (there are supposed to be old school libertarian "Don't Tread On Me" Republicans in the far North).
Nope.
Just people wondering who he was and where Dixville Notch is this morning.
Bingo. You just analyzed a good reason for the bump.
Google searches in NH for past 24 hours say:
Trump
Cruz
Kasich
Rubio
Jeb
He teaches Karate Chops in studios there, right?
Anigifs for the win!
That's exactly what it means--the graphs do not in any way show Kasich's popularity.
He has gone "all in" for NH--all his money, all his time and all his ground crew.
It's do-or-die for Kasich in NH. He may crawl on hands and knees until Ohio.
Reportedly, he personally called each and every voter in Dixville Notch and pressured them for a pledge of support. It was a PR move pure and simple.
They'll go to Bern. I don't think Gov. Freeschit has added free College to his Santa bag ... yet. |
