Swedish telecom chief to steer web body ICANN to independence [USA Internet control expires Sept 30]

San Francisco (AFP) - Sweden's Goran Marby was Monday named head of the body that manages Internet addresses, pledging to uphold checks and balances as it steps out from under US government oversight.

Marby, director-general of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority, will take charge in May of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as the nonprofit transitions to become an independent non-governmental body.

While the transition will not change how the Internet works, it will help reassure users, businesses and governments about its integrity, according to supporters who see it as a symbolic move towards asserting the web's independence.

The multistakeholder model is intended to allow virtually all users, in the public and private sector, to participate in Internet governance -- as opposed to a "multilateral" system controlled by governments.

A transition plan being prepared since early 2014 is undergoing final touches before being delivered to the US government, and is on track for completion this year, ICANN says.

Thank you for the earlier ping. I believe the reporting on this is a complete whitewash.

This is a trojan horse. The real goal here is to esablish Athenian ostracism, the power to banish web sites.

‘... a move to a more diverse structure should mean that it is better at self-policing and allows for far greater transparency and accountability ...’

Self-policing?

Power to ‘individuals as well as ‘global governments’.

Tacit reason for this change — fear of US snooping on the internet. But how does ICANN affect snooping?

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) — the non-profit organization that manages IP addresses and domain names.

Does NOTHING to stop snooping. All it does is control who is allowed to own a domain name.

I believe you are correct.

Please note the quick points I posted above. And a new tagline ...

I’ll quit bugging you. Just one last appeal.

You impressed me with your scholarly opinion on another issue, which is why I sought you out regarding what I believe to be a dangerous threat to internet free speech.

Obama still has tremendous treaty powers, especially when McConnell wants him to.

Remember McConnell’s open war declaration against the Tea Party?

This treaty would achieve their goals and be easily ‘Iran Dealed’.

Pleae note post 21 for quick notes.

It's fine. I was just confused by being pinged to topics of which I hadn't been a part.

Fair enough. And the comment is appreciated. I'll take a closer look at the topic and see if any comment (at this time) would be helpful. The thread seemed to have quieted by the time I responded the first time. The shelf life for most threads seems usually only 12 to 48 hours.

‘Some Republicans have remained wary of the transition and Congress has blocked government funds from being used to finish the handoff for the past several years. Last year’s spending blocked the funds from being used until at least October.’
