The Daily Beast is reporting that a small New Hampshire-based veterans charity has turned down a six figure check from Donald Trump. Liberty House turned Trump's money away because they objected to it being given to them in a public setting: a campaign rally for Trump.
The Beast's Tim Mak has more:
On Friday, Liberty House executive director Keith Howard received a call from a Trump campaign staffer, who conveyed that Trump would like to publicly present them with a six-figure check at a Londonderry rally on Monday, right before the Granite State primary.
It's an enormous amount of money for a small charity. But Howard said he wouldn't do it - risking the entire, substantial donation on a point of principle.
Howard, a 57-year-old Army vet, objected to the use of veterans for political purposes. He doesn't believe that his charity - which clothes the homeless, feeds the needy, and provides housing to 10 formerly homeless vets - should be presented with money by a political candidate at a political rally.
"This is not directed at the Trump campaign," Howard said. "This is about any campaign."
Plus, Howard believed appearing at a political rally could jeopardize his group's nonprofit status - something a call to an expert in the state attorney general's office confirmed. And he found it strange that the call was coming from a Trump campaign staffer, rather than someone related to the foundation that raised money for veterans.
The money generated from Trump's Iowa rally, as the Federalist reported, went to Trump's personal foundation first instead of going directly to the charities themselves. The rally was set up by Trump as an alternative to the Iowa Fox News debate he skipped out on.

Fortunately Ted chose dishonor in Iowa. Otherwise, there would be a lot of time for those who support Ted to revert to watching their ceiling fans all day,
So much negative campaigning. You must lead a miserable life.
Is this the same false vet group backed by Soros?
CW let her anti-Trump mania get ahead of the actual story. You can’t tell a story from the headline! ;-) Liberty House will get the money. Trump will have a campaign event. This is The Art of the Deal.

Trump supporter and New Hampshire State Rep. Al Baldasaro called Howard, telling him the mogul would present the check to Baldasaro, himself a vet. The state representative would then deliver the check to Liberty House after the primary in a more subdued way.
“Liberty House was told by an attorney they could lose their nonprofit status it they are on the stage with Trump... I disagree but respect Keith’s wishes. The check will be presented to me on Monday at the event and I will set up a time to come to Liberty House or do it at the Hall of Flags on behalf of the Trump Foundation,” Baldasaro told The Daily Beast.
“Liberty House got the mountain to move to us, instead of us going to the mountain of cash,” Howard told The Daily Beast. “I can take pride that we maintained our position. I am glad that the Trump campaign has found a way to follow through on what it promised to do.”
“When you run a charity organization for Americaâs heroes, you take the money.”
And lose your tax exempt status? From the article:
“Plus, Howard believed appearing at a political rally could jeopardize his group’s nonprofit status - something a call to an expert in the state attorney general’s office confirmed. And he found it strange that the call was coming from a Trump campaign staffer, rather than someone related to the foundation that raised money for veterans.”
This so-called Vet organization is probably as deceitful as others who profess to take care of the Veterans, while spending 85% of their donations on their own bags of goodies.
People donate to organizations at fund-raisers, parties, or even campaign events. Take the money that is offered to your organization and say “Thank-you”.
The people who said “no” to this donation for whatever reason should be ashamed of themselves. They are the ones
who are exploiting the Vets, not Donald Trump.
You need the money yet you choose to cut your nose off for spite.
Itâs like years ago when Rush Limbaugh wanted to help the Pediatric Aids Foundation run by super liberal Elizabeth Glaser. She said no, she did want any filthy money from conservatives.
Mr. Trump can just give that money to another Vet Charity that might want it.
How many time has Obama and other presidents used the military at their State of the Union presentations. If that's not political, then what is?
Mygosh, weren't the naysayers saying they didn't trust that the money would go to Veterans groups? The only way to demonstrate it is would be transparency. Besides that, the publicity just might get the group more donations for their cause. If they were really in in for the Vets, they'd put their false pride aside, and put the money to good use, helping Veterans.
I agree. What fools.
The author said the concern was true, so I guess it must be. I read the article and researched it myself.
What I posted is the exact restrictions on non-profits involving political activities. Show me were the concern is true.
Sorry, but the author and the director are incorrect in their assertion on several accounts. The money isn’t coming from a political campaign, it is coming from the Trump Foundation. The Vet Org. isn’t being asked to endorse the candidate or do anything that would violate the restrictions. Being present at a political rally does not mean anything, case in point Liberty University.
I guess by the author, directors, and your assertions Liberty University could lose their NonProfit status because they hosted several Political Events. Oh wait, they didn’t and won’t because they didn’t violate the restrictions.
Aw, sigh. Now maybe CW will leave the dark side and join our cause.
I don’t know.
I expect “Liberty” was vetted (since there are so many veterans’ groups who need donations) and specifically selected.

“....Howard believed appearing at a political rally could jeopardize his group’s nonprofit status - something a call to an expert in the state attorney general’s office confirmed. And he found it strange that the call was coming from a Trump campaign staffer, rather than someone related to the foundation that raised money for veterans.
One campaign legal expert said the interaction between Trump’s campaign and the Donald J. Trump Foundation was a serious issue....
Howard called the Trump staffer back Friday afternoon: “This is not the right thing to be doing,” he said. Howard suggested that someone to drop by the house for a lower-key check dropoff, or even mail the check.
Now, to be clear, Howard has no problem taking money from Trump’s fundraising.
“After we said that we would take the money, I got between 15 to 20 emails calling me a wh*re, a prostitute, and saying that I had sold out. I feel very comfortable with what we’re doing, with taking money to help homeless veterans.” Howard said. “But I’ll be g*d damned if I, in any way, support a political candidate or make a campaign appearance with any candidates. We stand for doing the right thing.”
On Saturday afternoon, the Trump campaign relented....

This isn’t Trump’s money...it is MINE! I want it to go to the vets, that’s why I did it!
Extra points for using one of the FR “word of the day”.
Good to hear.
:)
Just the kind of thing the demorats pull all the time.
Stupid. Grow up CW. This isn't going to hurt him in the slightest (as you would like it to).
This isn’t about “hurting” Trump, this is about waking you up.
Trump should just send the money...No reason to have them onstage to accept it...You are correct...
