Shopping centres in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, say they will be halving their opening times to four hours a day.
The move will allow them to comply with government energy rationing.
Ministers says a severe drought caused by El Nino has brought 18 of the country's hydro-electric dams to critically low water levels.
"To turn the lights off at one in the afternoon and not to be able to work would have a huge impact on our business," said Mleidys Galves who works in a pizzeria in the Lider Shopping Centre in Caracas.
"That is our peak selling time when people come out to eat lunch."

Ain’t Socialism grand? The masses get a bunch of free goodies until the producers of those goodies realize that its not worth producing them and stop. Then the shelves are empty and no one has anything.
Yet a large percentage of Democrats support Bernie Sanders.
Expect all sorts of “climate change” initiatives to exact similar requirements here in this country.

Updates on the chocolate ration to follow.
Venezuela is an oil-producing country. Burn oil, morons.
Maybe good ole Bern can go to Venezuela and straighten out their socialism problems. Then, on to CUBA.
Yep. Socialism would run perfectly, the stores would have products on the shelves - even toilet paper! - and everything would be just great. All socialism needs is a really, really, really smart person like Bernie to run it.
This is what Bernie Sanders would like to start, then eventually go to Soviet Union and then hopefully North Korea or Mao’s China during the purges.
Bernie is a nut job!
Don’t tell the university communists that. They think they are the smart ones who can make Socialism work, even though it has never succeeded anywhere for long. Margaret Thatcher said it best,” Socialism works until you run out of Other People’s Money.”
What’s going on now is Robert Mugabe’s Marxist-Leninist Communist Zimbabwe of 15 years ago in the Western Hemisphere.
Venezuela is now Cuba and moving towards North Korea.
Bernie Sanders is a piker compared to that, like a Norman Thomas democratic, anti-religious kind of Socialist.
So they’ll only be 50% more active than most of the American malls around here.
Socialism always destroys things that work, and when the left realizes that, it always demands a strengthening of the policies that failed.
I love it. Its socialism in action. Its interesting to watch and the world needs a couple on-going socialist crackups as a an example of how NOT to govern a nation. Literally everything could have been predicted, from the cheesy slogans of the Chavistas, to the toilet paper shortages.
Do I feel bad for the Venezuelans? Not really, because they chose this. It wasn’t imposed on them.
I’m really curious to see the final act in this play.
(both reports here on FR last week)
Another Socialist “success” for our “feel the Bern” fans! The ignorant (required for socialism to gain power) masses get promised a bunch of free goodies (little is actually delivered)... as observed by OB, the producers of those goodies soon realize it’s not worth producing stuff that’s gonna be stolen... then the shelves are empty and the promises vaporize. Rationing (and tyranny) is soon instituted and all but the “rulers” live on little more than a subsistence existence. Socialism is the biggest Ponzi scam is history! Those at the top live LARGE, the rest notso good! As those in the “larceny class” tend to “redistribute” first and foremost to themselves... only a “trickle down” for the ignorant masses.
Note the Bern/Hillary fans... once you vote your liberty away, you don’t get it back!
Venezuela has the greatest oil reserves in the world.
