Few people will talk about this, and fewer will even want to acknowledge it, but what Donald Trump did before the debate even began shows the measure of a real man's worth.
Trump and Carson
At the beginning of the ABC debate, each of the candidates were being introduced in a specific order. The first name called to the stage was Chris Christie. The applause was loud and lingered through the time when Martha Raddatz called the second candidate Ben Carson.
Dr. Carson did not hear his name called (easy to understand why when you listen to the video) and stood in the entry-way. The moderators, with their backs to the candidates, didn't notice his absence and called the third name on the list, Ted Cruz.
Ted walked past Dr. Carson and onto the stage. Carson remained in the awkward, and embarrassing position, 'no-mans-land', on-camera but out of sight of the live audience.
What happened next shows the remarkable character of Donald Trump.
The fourth name called was Donald Trump, but by then the back-stage crew and candidates were aware of Dr. Carsons' position. Trump slowly approached, and then realized the embarrassing position of a fellow candidate hanging in the wind.
Trump showed his leadership by standing right next to his friend, and not walking onto the stage.
The other names continued to be called, and proceeded as mentioned. But not Donald Trump, he remained with his colleague thereby reducing the internal anxiety felt by Carson.
It would have been very easy for Trump to walk by Ben, just like all the other candidates did. But instead he chose to wait, and remove the embarrassment factor by infinite magnitudes.
Then, like a boss, when Dr. Carson was called to the stage, Trump waited and allowed Ben to get the audience response and appreciation. It takes a lot of courage to make split second decisions like this, and it shows a remarkable insight into the man's character.
Trump has the ability to be in the moment. And contrary to the media narrative he is a true gentleman. These attributes are basic to negotiations of every possible stripe. Trump won the debate, BEFORE THE DEBATE EVEN STARTED.
This wasn’t a calculated decision. Trump did it instinctively. It struck him at the moment as the right thing to do.
Trump is sometimes rough around the edges. He’s also human and at times a very common normal guy.
It’s not nearly as all about him as some folks would like to believe.
Trump won the debate before the first question was asked.
It wasn't to steal votes from Carson, at least...
Yes, try the veal!
> It was definitely amateur hour
And that was the best ABC could do for a Presidential Debate. The producer of that mess should find other employment in field they can be competent in - say children programming.
Sorry, I wasn’t really paying much attention to what they said, other than they were not exactly charitable toward the debate management, saying they should have had a stage hand there or similar, to relay names as they were called. They definitely didn’t belittle Trump or Carson over it. Nor, I think, did they point out that others just walked on by...other than a mere mention of it, explaining what happened.
Martha dissed Carson. She exhibited media establishment privilege. Some misunderstand it and call it white privilege. Carson is invisible and unimportant to her.
The meme about Trump is dead wrong. He has more class than the sum of the others on stage.
I agree with all you said, but it really looked like a natural, spontaneous act of good manners and consideration on Trump’s part.
“...Trump stood there because he wanted to be the last, and get the most applause, not realizing, of course, Kasich had been forgotten...”
Well, that comment is even more stupid than the one made by VRW...
Your inability to acknowledge the simple kindness of a great man speaks volumes about you.
So it would appear.
It hardly makes Trump a good friend with noble character.
mornin', al baby!
Funny, what I saw was Trump heard his name called, poked his head around the corner and did the “get out there” hand wave, then when his name was called a second time walked up to Dr. Carson and hung out with him until the last call was made.
Friends don't let friends steal caucus votes.
I’m for Cruz and I thought Trump acted with class.
The “conservative nuthouse” blog got it wrong, though. No one noticed? Maybe if everybody was in a coma.
Well, whatever. It was classy just the same.
