The Japanese government says North Korea launched what's widely believed to be a long-range ballistic missile on Sunday.
The government said the missile was launched at 9:31 AM Japan time from the western coast of North Korea toward the direction of Okinawa Prefecture.
But the bigger question is why now?
Because of North Korean secrecy, we do not know for sure. But it seems likely that Kim Jong-un is seeking clear successes before his important Seventh Party Congress in May when he wants to appear to be the all-powerful leader of North Korea.
But he has been experiencing major appearances of weakness. For example, in the last three years China has had six summit meetings with South Korea, suggesting that South Korea is an important country and its president, Park Geun-hye, is a great leader. But China has had no summit meetings with North Korea, suggesting that, for Beijing, North Korea is not a significant country and that Kim Jong-un is a weak leader.
Are you serious? Russia is on the move right now in their quest to restore their lost empire. They are basically trying to bring back the Soviet Union, under the guise of combating terrorism. In fact, they are likely encouraging the terrorism in one way or another, as they have been suspected of doing on several other occasions in the past, in order to give them cover for moving in and ultimately grabbing control of the Middle East, or at least a substantial part of it. The saboteur-in-chief (Obama) has paved their way with his promised "flexibility" on missile defense and nukes (New START nuke treaty and the Obama-Putin Iran nuke deal).
Re: said South Korea presumed that North Korea has introduced key parts of a long-range missile from Russia...
Thanks for this. No great surprise.
Getting ready to go out for the day. Will check this out more closely later. AFTER the Super Bowl of course! :)
Encouraging Kim Jong-un by providing rocket hardware can create more than a convenient diversion. It will embolden him to the point where he can destabilize the Far East. It will trigger serious arms race in the region, with S. Korea and Japan starting to acquire their own strategic weapons. The prospect of two countries armed with long-range missiles and nukes is not what I think Russia wants.
N. Korea's relation with China has been stymied, but lately there were signs that China decided to change their course. They acquiesced N. Korea's nuclear test and even defended it, while stonewalling S. Korea's request to rein on N. Korea. Now that N. Korea launched another rocket, it would be interesting to see how China reacts.
S. Korea will probably agree to the deployment of THAAD in her territory. With the latest provocations, N. Korea forced neighbors to take sides. It created a situation where S. Korea pull away from China, and solidify two tripartite alliances, one of them made up of U.S., S. Korea, and Japan, and another of N. Korea, China, and Russia.
It will probably suit N. Korea fine. I am not sure if China is complicit in this or played into N. Korea's hand.

the only things he can claim as his achievement.
We have the best politicians that money can buy to allow this to happen.
True, but Putin is in favor of issues that can stir up problems for Western countries, what will happen in the long run is not what he is thinking about.
This is what Russia is saying: Moscow, Feb. 7 (Petra) -- Russia today condemned North Korea's launch of a long-range rocket, warning that the move would destabilize the region, including North Korea itself. "It is obvious that such actions would lead to a serious aggravation of the situation on the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia on the whole, and inflict serious damage to the security of the countries of the region, first and foremost North Korea itself," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

But, if that is what they mean, why do they supply NK with equipment that will make it easier to produce missiles and nuclear devices?
S. Korean Navy (and definitely U.S. Navy) will sail out to Yellow Sea to recover debris from the N. Korean booster rocket. According to news report, it was broken up into 270 pieces. In N. Korea’s previous rocket launch, their booster rocket fell into sea more or less intact, and its salvaged parts were in good condition. This time around, maybe N. Korea attached a device designed to blow up the rocket after it was used. So it may be more difficult to piece together rocket components, but in time it will show what kind of components are used.
Have no fear, Donald will build a dome over NK and make to North Koreans pay for it.

The American experts at Loral did not check with the State Department, and the report was given to the Chinese. Several months later, they ``turned themselves in'' to the State Department, after which, the Pentagon launched an investigation, and concluded in its report, labeled ``secret,'' that ``United States national security has been harmed.''
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R., Calif.), Chairman of the House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee, said that U.S. expertise has ``perfected'' China's Long March rockets, which are identical in design to Chinese strategic nuclear missiles. A Loral employee said "The most interesting aspect of the accident was this: engineers who reviewed the recovered payload debris noticed something special that was missing: encryption hardware."
**********
A witness along with the MP's reported the same events as to how the missile guidance system hardware had been taken out by Chinese personnel and his report is in laymans terms:
Bill Clinton allowed the Loral missile guidance system to be sent to China and then, under close observation, it was to be installed in one of their rockets. All of this was done -to help China- by using our Loral system- to get their telephone communications system in place via one of their Long March rockets to a designated area in space.
That Chinese rocket crashed into a mountain across from the launch pad 2 1/2 minutes after it left the launch pad.
There was a detachment of 24 U S MP's that had been sent along with the guidance system box to make sure that it remained intact and unopened until installed (with our personnel observing).
The rocket left the launch pad with the Loral guidance system in it. When that Chinese rocket crashed, Chinese military personnel were immediately rushed to the crash sight and they surrounded the broken up rocket and kept our MP's away. Our 24 MP's were held back for three hours which allowed the Chinese the time to extract the guidance technology.
Bill Clinton was supposed to get clearance from a Congressionl committee before any military tech was allowed to leave our country But, Bill Clinton intentionally went bypassed the law and did not get the required clearance from the Congressional committee. It was Bill Clinton himself who allowed China to secure our latest missile guidance technology!
"When the 24 U S MPs where finally allowed to go to the rocket itself - they discovered that the encryption hardware had been removed."
That system could not be improved upon, and hasn't been impoved and it was and is the best. And now the Chinese have it and possibly have passed that technology on to Norht Korea.
The manuals and report on how to repair some issues with the guidance system were not supposed to be given to the Chinese but Loral personell did so before someone in top tiers of Loral could stop them. This was all in the Loral reports and this is why Loral, in court, pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a 2.1 million dollars in fines.
This is just one of the eight categories of treason that Bill Clinton performed. This Loral guidance technology theft is in Senator James Inhofe's June 23, 1999 speech on the Senate Floor. Inhofe titled it the 'Clinton National Security and Coverup. It was Bill Clinton himself who is responsible for China stealing our missile guidance system technology.
