Friday night's program featured a fireworks show and a One Republic concert.
San Francisco police turned away thousands of people from Super Bowl City late Friday when the event reached maximum capacity.
The popular free event along the Embarcadero on Friday night drew a crush of visitors and NFL fans looking to soak up the excitement over Super Bowl weekend. The night was headlined by a fireworks show and a performance from One Republic.
An officer patrolling Super Bowl City estimated at least 15,000 people inside the event late Friday.
Many who planned to attend the event were disappointed when police turned them away.
"I was bummed out," said Norris Rivers, who came from Stockton. "It didn't work out, but we're here having fun." Some people took Friday's early closure in stride.
"For safety reasons you have to limit the number of people," said Sia Langi, a San Francisco resident. "But there is another night tomorrow."
Super Bowl City resumes Saturday and pop star Alicia Keys is scheduled to perform in the evening.
By marketing women too.
Fans of the two competing teams to start.
(If it’s traditional teams like Steelers, Patriots, or Packers you get a huge number of diehards. If it’s a “new” team in the SB like Carolina you get a lot of “one time in my life” types.)
Then throw in a ton of locals who are “thrilled” to be “rewarded” with the “Super Bowl” experience by the NFL.
All the stuff here in Indy was mobbed.
That was Pats vs Giants.
Those east coast folks are serious big spenders.
It’s the last game of the season. Next is the combine, then the draft and then a bleak emptiness. Football fans go into withdrawal. It’s intensely painful, and nothing will assuage it until training camp.
If the ice storm that happened the last time the SB was in Atlanta proved one thing it’s that the SB and all of its craziness is 100% weatherproof.
Like the US Tennis Open in New York City in August.
And more natural breaks in the action to insert marketable commercial time than soccer, rugby, baseball, NASCAR, etc.
What I find funny Doughty, as I’m reading your post I look up at the TV and lo and behold, the podium the guys are sitting at doing their endless talking - has a Turkish Airlines logo on it! Gotta get the muzzies in on good old Americana, freakin dolts.
You say it’s civilization on parade.
I say it’s THE END of civilization on parade!
I’m sure there are negatives to be pointed to, but I don’t see the SuperBowl and surrounding activity as some sort of sign of our decaying civilization.
In Pro Sport I see the Bread and Circuses as attested to by the late Romans.
The regular man on the street is more concerned with sports than he is with the integrity of our nation.
I was an avid sports fan in my 20s. I always voted and paid attention to issues and candidates.
I suspect this segment of our society probably isn’t much different than others.
