Schumann: Quintet for Piano and Strings in E-flat, Op. 44

Thanks to a cold, I'm doing some classical chamber music for people who don't necessarily like classical music.

The year 1842 was a year of chamber music miracles for Robert Schumann, and he wrote a massive amount that year.

This is one of the great warhorses of the chamber repertory. The finale is marked "allegro ma non troppo," "fast, but don't push it," but it doesn't work at that speed because the seams show. Bob lays down a gesture that says that he's going to wrap it up, but then he digresses into a double fugue, which sounds just fine but messes up the flow. As a result, the custom has arisen to play it much faster, "allegro vivace," to paper over the seams. When he finally gets to the end, it's a killer.

Schumann: Piano Quintet in E-flat, Op. 44, fourth movement

I have a CD of Malo from the mid-1990s. I did not know that they had been around since 72.

Shostakovich: Sonata for Piano and Cello in D minor, Op. 40

This sonata was written in 1934, when Stalin's purges had begun, and no one could be sure if there might be a midnight knock on the door and a one-way trip to the gulag. Dmitri had just seen Stalin order a vicious review of his opera "Lady Macbeth of the Mtensk District," and he was getting very, very nervous.

The finale of this sonata is Haydn on acid. He takes the theme from the variations movement Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony and pushes it in a sarcastic direction with a chop of the guillotine at the end. The Great Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter noted the connections between Haydn and Shostakovich, and he liked to pair them in concert for comparison. It's deliciously nasty!

Arensky: Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in D minor, Op. 32

Anton Arensky was 20 years younger than Tchaikovsky and 13 years older than Rachmaninov, which puts him in the center of the great nationalistic Russian music movement. He died at age 45 from a toxic mix of vodka and tuberculosis. The former was the curse of the Russian nation.

In this trio, Tony got on his tiptoes, reached for the stars and snagged a bunch of them. He was never able to regain this level of quality in his later chamber music, spending the rest of his life trying to recapture this moment. I featured the first movement a few months ago, which is a two-handkerchief piece. This scherzo is a delight, negating the darkness of the previous movement. The central panel of the movement is Tony walking down the wide streets of St. Petersburg, cigar in hand, and eyeing the beautiful ladies.
