Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recounted his older half-sister's struggles with drug addiction and eventual death during an emotional speech Thursday.
"These tragedies are happening in human lives all over this country -- it's the human journey," the GOP presidential candidate said at Emanuel Baptist Church in Hooksett, N.H., according to CNN. "It's fraught with peril and sometimes people make decisions bound and determined to destroy themselves.
"As a family you wonder: What could I have done more? Was there a way to change the path she was on? Those are the questions you never fully answer."
Cruz was describing Miriam Cruz, one of two children from his father Rafael Cruz's first marriage. He said she resented her parents' divorce and eventually turned towards prescription painkillers.
"Every one of us who has dealt with these demons -- or who has dealt with loved ones grappling with these demons -- everyone knows that these are personal journeys," Cruz said.
"Faith and a relationship with God can be a powerful, powerful element in turning that around," he added, citing his father's own method for escaping alcohol addiction.
Cruz added that he tried intervening in his half-sister's issues but could not convince her she needed rehabilitation.

Cruz Father: Ted Cruz "Anointed" To "Bring the Spoils of War to the Priests"
Right. The supposition is that his comment about his sister will open up attacks such as the one from December. That was the basis of my comment IF they try to use this against Cruz.
makes no issue ....Making an issue by giving special attention. I have seen everyone of Trump’s speeches and never heard him mention his alcoholic brother.
“And betrayed its youth for all but a decade and a half of American history by legalizing the toxic addictive drug alcohol.”
Making these all-encompassing comparisons and generalities is laughable.
Would you not concede that heroin is more dangerous than alcohol? Then we can walk it out to PCP, to crack cocaine, to meth. Everyone knows that these drugs kill, and they kill quickly. These drugs, including marijuana, reach inside to the brain and do permanent damage. People do these drugs to alter their consciousness in a major way.
Cigarettes kill, but not nearly as quickly, and the habit is occurs mostly in their bodies. People smoke cigarettes because they want the calming effects, the relaxation.
Same with alcohol. It destroys lives more so than cigarettes, especially with drunk drivers.
The drugs out there now will end up destroying our society, and the will to stop thehir curse has to come from a societal outcry, not government action.
That the years you mentioned did not have the problem to he extent we have now was due to the society and the culture we had at the time, which had been arranged by Christianity.
Alcohol was supposed to have been a hideous problem in the 19th century, but it was routed out by leaders in society.
So the US was in betrayal of its youth from 1787 until the 1930's when FDR saved us with defacto mj prohibition?
And betrayed its youth for all but a decade and a half of American history by legalizing the toxic addictive drug alcohol.
Would you not concede that heroin is more dangerous than alcohol?
Of course. Would you not concede that marijuana (whose legalization you brought up) is less dangerous than alcohol?
These drugs, including marijuana, reach inside to the brain and do permanent damage.
Marijuana and alcohol can do so if overused.
the will to stop thehir curse has to come from a societal outcry, not government action.
I agree - although this statement seems at odds with your prior beefing about legalizing marijuana ... a government action, as is criminalization.
Donald Trump shared the âUnbelievable Informationâ He Received From His Brother Before His Death from Alcohol Poisoning. That was my point - all of the candidates will be asked this question in New Hampshire. So, according to your response, Trump also did so ‘not to throw the NH primary’, as all of the candidates will.
“I agree - although this statement seems at odds with your prior beefing about legalizing marijuana ... a government action, as is criminalization.”
It was not a government action, it was by popular vote.
Ted not only mentioned his mother in his Iowa victory speech, she was present. Now I agree that speech was overlong and probably the poorest executed thing of his campaign to date. Although if flubbing your victory speech is your biggest problem you’re not doing too bad. Ted just needs more opportunities to practice his.
It was not a government action, it was by popular vote.
The vote was for the government to take the action of legalizing marijuana - nobody pulled a voting lever labeled "pot is great stuff".
At least here and I assume everywhere else heroin became the drug of choice because of the success of cracking down on prescription pain killers. People finally started emptying their medicine cabinets of pain killers they no longer needed so kids couldn’t get a hold of them and the supply dried up significantly. Heroin has become a hell of a lot cheaper than OXY and has you hooked right from the start.
By the time one is saying, "Hmmm ... oxy has become hard to get, think I'll try heroin instead" one already has an addiction.
“The vote was for the government to take the action of legalizing marijuana”
The vote was of the people, by the people, for the people, to legalize their marijuana use.
“nobody pulled a voting lever labeled “pot is great stuff”.”
But the majority pulled the lever to make the sale of marijuana legal. They must have thought it was great stuff.
Or that marijuana criminalization, with its enrichment of criminals, was terrible stuff.
No, this is news already out there.
