Your last name could be Cruz or Rubio but unless you pass the stringent political tests of certain self-appointed gatekeepers, you are not authentically Latino. One such gatekeeper is Roberto Suro who wrote in a New York Times column that Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio can't be considered to really be Latino because they do not subscribe to liberal identity politics. Suro details how both Cruz and Rubio have failed his political test of being what he considers to be a true Latino:

I believe this is call the “No True Scotsman” fallacy.
NYT Translation: Don’t vote for Cruz & Rubio, Latino peeps.
Interesting that in REPUBLICAN primary 3 of 4 top finishers were diverse candidates.
DEMOCRAT primary 2 old white folks
They aren’t really Latino because such a thing doesn’t exist.
Will they bring up the 19 puerto rican terrorists hitlary’s husband released when she was running in NY To gain the latin vote?

Compared to Julian Castro, at least Yeb can speak spanish
Just more everyday ordinary “FU Whitey” racism from every group of People of Color ... it’s in your face every day, all day, top to bottom, and yet “whitey” is still scared of being called a racist ...

I’ve been told this to my face many times.
Liberal Land - Where race and gender are choices, whereas racism is in your genes.

Go to Latin America and you'll see people of all colors, religions, and classes.
It sounds like he got his definition of "Latino" from Kelly Osbourne.
And I’m not Irish because I don’t drink.
“La Raza” is Mexican.
Lots of people on all sides of this carefully ignore the ethnic nationalism in all these groups. “Hispanics” are not interchangeable or mutually sympathetic.
Mexicans don’t care about Puerto Rican politics. And Cubans less so.
So I guess that each can be labeled an “Uncle Tomas.”
It is provincial, and even in Mexican terms, only some Mexicans count.
“No true Mexican” is more like it.
