I saw an interesting documentary on Earl Campbell. Apparently his knees are pretty banged up, but his most serious injuries are more likely linked to a chronic defect in his spinal column that was never noticed until after he retired from the NFL. They said if it had been diagnosed in a physical exam back then, he probably would have been advised not to play football at all.
Some just did, others already knew. CTE is a BS shakedown game.
Yes, I can see Kevorkian writing a report proving that all of those he assisted in dying, were destined to die anyway.
I wonder how many concussions are too many before CTE is a concern.
Since we all know that concussions and CTE are caused by climate change, probably not many.
Kenny Stabler is one of my football heroes. But even Kenny was probably surprised he lived so long considering the copious amount of cocaine and alcohol he ingested.
Defensive end.
Like soccer? Which is worse? This constant search for “safety” is a disease in and of itself.
It’s actually the increased padding that led to more head injuries in football. Proper tackling techniques were abandoned for “Sports Center” hits.
That's why I have to laugh about all the outrage over Manziel. Heck, back in the day, almost all of the quarterbacks partied like that.
Fine. Leave my sons alone. They loved football, learned about commitment, teamwork, dedication, and being men. Pray that they are around when your kids need to be protected.
That's ridiculous. Just because someone wears a white coat doesn't mean you can't scoff at them when they're absurd.
Actually earl is much better now. Walks and talks and everything.
Supposedly the problem isn’t really just the hard blows to the brain that cause concussions, although getting more blows to the brain after getting a concussion might make it worse. It is the moderate blows the brain receives over the course a football career into the pros. Any time the brain is jarred, or changes direction rapidly, like maybe just falling down.
The problem is it seems that not everyone has the problem at the same severity, at least as far as functioning. That’s why there are some guys that don’t have any symptoms and some do. At least that’s my theory.

Becoming really big and fast also has to have something to do with it, probably better performance through chemistry has a lot to do with it too.

I would be in favor of weight limits for players, 250 pounds max.
I wonder how much that would help. If it just doesn’t make the game faster, it might work. It would seem to be stopping the severity of blows to the brain caused by player’s mass as opposed to just the number of total blows. I’m not sure if anyone knows if that would actually help the supposed problem at this point. Maybe one way to know is if heavyweight boxers generally have more problems with their brain because they hit harder than lightweights or flyweights.

the more armour they wear the more susceptible they become to injury...in the old days with much less sophisticated equipment, ..as in rugby....the tackling was more to the lower limbs and much less to the head...take hockey...30 years ago no helmets...no face masks..even for goal tenders......therefore the players kept their sticks and shots down and serious injuries were minimized and the transgressors were soon dealt with ....severely...today fighting has been replaced by the referees whistle and players are constantly taking head shots...
