Ahead of the Iowa caucuses, Donald Trump's primary attack against rival Ted Cruz was that he was not qualified for the presidency based on the fact that he was born in Canada. While true, Cruz's mother was an American citizen at the time of his birth, thus meeting the constitutional requirement that a president be a "natural born citizen." Now, the Illinois Board of Elections is weighing in.
And too bad for Trump, their ruling is in Cruz's favor.
"The candidate is a natural born citizen by virtue of being born in Canada to his mother who was a U.S. citizen at the time of his birth," the board said in its ruling.
Noting the difference between natural born citizens and naturalized citizens, the board said Cruz "did not have to take any steps to go through a naturalization process at some point after birth.â
"Further discussion on this issue is unnecessary," the board added.
Thus, Cruz is eligible to stay on the ballot for the Illinois' primary election on March 15.
Case closed.
In before sore cruzerman!
Does the election board even have a legal background?
It’s a valid ruling for Illinois unless someone challenges it in court.
But we really need a federal court ruling to put the matter to rest.
It’s so much easier getting Constitution disputes answered by an election board than the Supreme Court. What is Judge Joe Brown’s opinion?
I have been waiting on pins and needles for the State of Illinois to clear this matter up for us.
Thank goodness they have finished.
Agreed, seems to me they Approved the Obamanation as well.
Trump will sue the US Constitution.
He still has lawsuits that have been filed in Texas and Utah. I doubt seriously that those courts will be relying on the Illinois election board as an authority on the matter.
Cruz tried to get the case dismiss in Illinois by claiming that the board didn’t have the authority to determine that. The board dissagreed.
Cruz’s lawyers also said that “every judicial decision and virtually every constitutional authority agree that a ânatural born citizenâ is anyone who was a citizen at the moment they were âbornââas opposed to becoming a citizen through the naturalization process at some point after their birth.”
I think that’s a misrepresentation as I’ve seen articles where Constitutional authorities dissagree.
This suit was frivolous, the one that will matter is the one that the DNC will file (IF Cruz wins the nomination) and it will be timed so as to wreak maximum havoc with his campaign and most favor the Democrat candidate. And while it will be filed by the DNC you can bet it will have the full private and unofficial support of the GOP.
All it’s going take is one federal judge who is willing to say such a suit has merit. Feel lucky?
Trump wouldn't welch.
But, but, that’s not the supreme court!
Of course the SCOTUS won’t hear it...

To hell with the birther issue.
Let’s get back to the real issues like immigration, taxes, and trade.
That’s where Trump wins and Cruz loses. This crap is useless.
Several months ago Trump said that Cruz is eligible, and that the birther issue was a non-issue. About a month ago, he said that although he believes Cruz to be eligible, the Dems would make an issue out of it. Now Trump doesn’t think Cruz is eligible after all. Trump has changed his position on this issue as often as he’s changed his mind on, well. EVERY position. I’m shocked! Shocked, I tell you!
Cruz is the only one qualified for Natural Born Citizen for three countries: USA, Canada and Cuba. Mother USA, Father Cuba and Canada.
Trump reminds me of one of the Jerky Boys who says he’ll sue everybody on one of those prank calls. Hilarious.

Oh boy, if the Illinois Election Board says it . . .
Almost correct.
To become a Cuban citizen his father would have had to submit paperwork to the govt which I doubt happened.
Of course they would say Cruz is eligible. If he is the nominee they would have no problem keeping Illinois a blue state.
