I tip my cap, unreservedly, to Ted Cruz. With everything on the line - and so many GOP colleagues cowed and intimidated - he took on Donald Trump and won. Late last year I wrote that the GOP needed an actual leader, someone who would step up and take on Trump directly:
Now is the time. A presidential campaign is an early test of leadership, a proving ground for dealing with the challenges of the world's most difficult job. I don't want the last man standing. I want the guy who took down the king. If Trump can absorb the best shots from the Republican party's best young talent, then he deserves the nomination. If one of the two talented freshman senators can dethrone The Donald, then at least we have some assurance that they can first stand strong against the coming Clinton onslaught and then have the strength of will to lead a nation desperate not just for wisdom but for the right kind of tough-minded leadership.
Cruz challenged the king of polls - the man who'd intimidated so many others - and he won. And he did so when the conventional wisdom said that he'd lose - that the larger the turnout, the greater the chance that Trump would win. Instead, with record Iowa turnout, Cruz won.
This is a deeply encouraging moment for the conservative movement. To his immense and undying credit, Cruz refused to pander on ethanol, he defied Iowa's popular governor, and he stuck to his conservative principles - and he won.
Yes, Marco Rubio exceeded all expectations, but tonight was Ted Cruz's night. There is much hard fighting ahead, but had Trump won, we would even now be shuddering not just for the future of the conservative movement but for the future of a nation bounded and governed by constitutional principles. Cruz stood up when others fled. Iowa rewarded him for his courage, and tonight Cruz is ascendant, Trump is in retreat, and the conservative movement breathes the air of new life and new hope.
New Hampshire represents a different challenge, and the race is far from over, but Cruz deserves the accolades - and momentum - he'll get from Iowa. Well done, Ted. You did your part for your country on this crucial night.
Cruz has a lot of work ahead of him. Trump will keep attacking him from the left, and it's not really Trump's fault. He's not really clear on this left/right differentiation.
Rubio is going to be formidable now that most of the non-Cruz, non-Trump voters will start drifting to Rubio.
No, it’s something the Apostle Paul taught by word and by example, being all things to all men, that by all means he might save some. In those areas we can adapt to our potential audience, why not? So tell the truth, yes, but use the local language and customs as the vehicle. Sound advice.
Peace,
SR
that is a rather doctrinaire statement that verges on pure BS
I am opposed to OPEN BORDERS! I am looking at the long term. Who can pull enough of those so called independents to WIN in November. Now somehow that translates to you I have faith in Trump. Ridiculous!!!
OK, I wasnât going to call you at as being unhinged, but this takes the cake. Are you really as bad as Sheldon at detecting sarcasm?
Dear, Cruz did not answer the moderators question regarding his eligibility problem. Danced all around, claimed that Rubio, Jindal, and somebody else I think Santorum all had eligibility questions. Cruz obviously was informed in what 'natural born' means. But, he never said I am natural born. Trump kindly advised him to get it cleared up.... Then Cruz snarked his LIE regarding Trump's mother causing Trump eligibility question.... I will grant it was a sarcastic lie.
What is it about truth that makes people then hurl insults? I am the one unhinged??????? I watched it, I do not need other people interpreting what I saw and heard my self.
Those that wrote the Constitution were grandfathered in... There was NO question regarding their loyalty.. It was a protective measure to the 'natural born' citizenry in future generations. It was/is a birthright. You know kinda like Esau who sold his birthright for a bowl of red pottage (lentils)...
I was born in Germany, of two US citizen parents... born a US citizen YES, but NOT natural born.
They did something, my humble apologies that I didn’t know exactly what is was that they did I! Point is, bucko they did something that allowed - gave McCain permission to run for President! Will they do the same for Cruz, or will need need to sell his soul to the GOPe establishment to get it?
Cruz won’t build a wall.
I believe that as Cruz crosses the country, win or loose, his mission continues to be of informing the public what so many aren’t aware of. and what needs to be done to set the nation straight again.
One of the things I admire in Cruz is the courage you mentioned.....if it’s what he sees as right and according to this nations laws and the constitution...he will not waver from his position regardless of the “thunder”....he can not be toppled when he knows he’s right.
Another thing is he simply can’t be rattled easily.....there’s a sureness in his step, and not so much confidence in himself, though he has that, but he knows where he’s grounded...and that foundation cannot be moved.
Trump has no foundation and why he slips and slides to whatever corner of the room he thinks will bring him the results he desires. That’s just what he is and does...and has done so his whole life.... People have certainly taken note of that and are not impressed.
The establishment, now with Rubio fully under their wing, will continue to soak him with revenue , advice and a host of other gratuities in order to have him as their yes man. He won’t mind.....they bought him long ago.
This needs to get down to Cruz v. Rubio fast.
Cruz backers should hope for a Rubio win in NH. That would make Trump a two-time loser and those who’ve been attracted to his shtick will move to Cruz fast as the only anti-establishment hope. But if Trump wins, then it stays Cruz, Trump and Rubio...with Rubio getting the Lion’s Share of the Bush/Christie/Kasich/Fiorina/etc. vote as they all fall by the wayside.

In other words, you ARE re-defining the term “progressive.”
Gotcha.
By your own claims, regarding “natural born” intent of the framers, a child born on US soil to illegal aliens is eligible to hold the office of the president, but a child born in another country to a member of our military is not eligible to hold the office.
That is a very silly position. Hence, the snark and sarcasm.
Same was said in 1980 about Reagan.
“They did something,...”
Very true, as unnecessary as it might have been.
“Point is, bucko they did something that allowed - gave McCain permission to run for President!”
The Senate does not “allow” or “give permission” to anyone to run for the office of a co-equal branch. What they did was nothing more than window dressing in support of McCain.
“Will they do the same for Cruz,”
Of course not. Cruz is hated by the establishment.
“or will need need to sell his soul to the GOPe establishment to get it?”
Clearly Cruz is not willing to sell anything to the GOPe. So, he is not at all concerned about a Senatorial affirmation, window dressing exercise.
It is NOT a position... it is what it is, 'natural born' comes from two US citizen parents giving birth to their child on US soil.
Anchor babies are NOT natural born, which is why the smartest HarvardLawSchool grad Cruz brought up Rubio, Jindal and I think Santorum... They are not natural born, and Cruz knows it.
Jmo I think we’re headed to a Cruz/Rubio race.
LOL...National RINO Review
....the establishment paper writing glowingly about CRuz. Of course!
no, I have not redefined progressive.
I reject the thoughts of a regressive that see ordinary conservatives as being so far to the left that they are progressive.
it is a relative thing
relatively , regressives are to the right of the conservative spectrum
If one believes that the current size, and by extension, reach of the Federal monster is acceptable, then they are BY definition a PROGRESSIVE.
You can change that definition all you want, but truths are unmaliable.
