Cruz hits The Donald on 'TrumpCare'
Politico ^ | February 1, 2016 | Dan Diamond with Joanne Kenen

CRUZ HITS TRUMP ON HEALTH CARE - AND HE'S KIND OF RIGHT - Locked in a close battle in Iowa, Ted Cruz is turning to health care in an attempt to separate himself from rival Donald Trump. A brutal ad airing in Iowa links "HillaryCare" and "ObamaCare" with "TrumpCare" - and uses Trump's own words against him.

"Everybody's got to be covered, this is an un-Republican thing for me to say," the ad quotes Trump saying on 60 Minutes last fall. "[And] the government's gonna pay for it."

Cruz pushed this message further on several Sunday shows. "A vote for Donald Trump is a vote for ObamaCare," Cruz claimed on Meet The Press. "Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have the identical position on health care. Which is they want to put the government in charge of you and your doctor. Now my views are polar opposites."

- TrumpCare remains vaguely defined. Trump called Cruz a "total liar" and declared, "I am so against Obamacare." But the thing is, Trump has repeatedly reiterated his commitment to some form of universal coverage - just as Cruz suggests. However, we still don't know any specifics of a Trump health plan, or how he'd pay for it.

Pressed again on Sunday, he still refused to offer details. "We'll work something out," Trump said on ABC's This Week. "Nobody knows health care better than Donald Trump."

Trump says he’ll stop Muslims from entering the U.S. until “we figure out what’s going on.” Trump followers don’t need specifics, they just need Trumps words. “So it shall be written. So it shall be done.”

Now ironically 6 years later here government managed health care is okay because their pseudo-conservative candidate says it's alright.

There were people (Trump supporters, of course) on a previous thread on this topic who explicitly said that they would be OK with single-payer, as long as they trusted the person who was in charge of the plan.

It was, as you said, absolutely mind blowing. Just wait until the Orwellian response when Trump pivots (further back) to the center-left if he's nominated - "We've always been in support of socialist health care"

Sixty minutes just did a story on ethics and lawyers...it was an eye opener.

Government lawyers are the worst.

Who is? To me a conservative who works in the public sector all his life is a hypocrite.

You ignore Cruz's time in private practice. Well, you didn't ignore it entirely, you just mischaracterized it, saying that he dealt exclusively with government issues. For one thing, that's wrong - he was the head of Morgan Lewis's Supreme Court and Appellate practice, which deals with more than just government issues. And, for another thing, arguing against the government is not "working in the public sector."

I had to negotiate health insurance for work for years, and I’m sure Trump didn’t personally negotiate or get into details the insurance but had someone like me do it. The only thing business is interested in is getting the best benefits for the least cost because it comes out of their bottom line. I would imagine negotiating insurance for freeloaders at taxpayer’s expense is a little more difficult.

You captured Ted Cruz “exactly”, as he likes to say! Ted has be proposing and Ted has been talking, and Ted has gotten nothing done. While he was talking and proposing, Ted also burned all his bridges to the Senate and most of the House. So one can anticipate that when Ted is President he will continue to talk and propose and nothing will get done.

Exactly. Everyone running against Trump is all talk. No action. Good luck with that!

Is that you, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz?

More like Alan Grayson. There is a video of him saying the Republican plan for healthcare is to die quickly.

Presidential candidates talk about laws as if they can initiate legislation. It’s a shell game designed to blow smoke up a constituency’s rear. Trump is the end of all that.

This is getting weirder and weirder....

So all that stuff Reagan promised in 1980 about tax cuts, and increasing military spending, and passing laws to make it easier for businesses, was all stuff we should have ignored because he couldn't technically initiate that legislation himself? That's nuts. The President comes up with the framework, and then allies in Congress introduce it.

And by the way, to the extent you expect Trump to do things like build a wall, and increase tariffs on China by 45%, etc., that also requires legislation that he is unable to initiate. But you apparently have no problem applauding him for making those legislative proposals. You only retreat behind "he can't initiate legislation" when it's something that is more controversial here.

The only reason Trump is ducking out on specifics is that he doesn't want to alienate voters. He wants to remain all things to all people by speaking in generalities for as long as he can. Or at least until he wins the nomination.

We are screwed.

Here is how we will know if we are screwed....if we see a citizen uprising for Trump, we have a CHANCE. If we do not see a citizen uprising, we will get Rubio, then we will get more of the same.

It really is that simple.

Presidential candidates talk about laws because the President can (and often does) submit legislation for consideration by Congress, and because the President plays an active role in working with Congress to pass legislation (even legislation not initially submitted by the President).

But, you would rather a candidate just not talk about his positions. Better to just personally destroy his opponents - we'll have to elect him to learn his policies and principles.

Exactly... I am a Cruz supporter 100%, but also enough of a realist to realize and admit his blunders, and shortcomings.

OTOH, a significant number of the Trump ilk here that view Trump as a near deity. Very troubling we have mindless bots like that here.

After a lot of initial hope, I've come to the conclusion that we have a pretty flawed stable of candidates. Our goal should be to pick the best out of that group.

But the number of people who can't see or admit any flaws in Trump...it's borderline creepy.

The ones that really get me are the ones waxing eloquent about what a "real man" he is. I could perhaps understand it if perhaps you were a single woman, but otherwise....

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

“Donald trump employs tens of thousands of people.”

Cruz is trying to shame Trump? I have written payroll checks, I’m sure a lot of others here have too.
Cruz has never made payroll. He’s a hired hand.
Go Trump!

Well, sometimes he hires independent contractors. Then he declares bankruptcy, stiffs them, and they can’t pay their workers for the work they did.

I had to manage a payroll for 17 years and a positive cash flow. That’s why I cringe everytime I think of Cruz’s tax plan for business.
