Cruz Defends 'Voting Violation' Mailer

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is defending a campaign mailer that Iowa's secretary of state says misrepresents election law.

The mailer bills itself as a "voting violation" notice and tells the recipient it's been sent due to "low expected voter turnout in your area." It then grades the recipient's voting history and that of several neighbors, citing public records.

Cruz told reporters in Sioux City, Iowa, on Saturday that the mailing is "routine."

He says he won't apologize

I was a Cruz supporter up until about 2 weeks ago when I changed to Trump. This nonsense just hammers home how right I was to switch.

Even if Cruz wins tomorrow, this garbage is going to follow him all across the country. If he had quickly apologized, it could have been over. Doubling down has made it worse than it would have ever been.

Cheers.....

With the help of his dad, Trump built the book depository in Dallas. Had he not built this evil building, JFK would still be our president to this very day.

Remarkable planning.

And by 2018, President Mrs. Bill may find the perfect candidate to unseat Ted as TX finally turns “blue”.

The people bitchin are not true believers and are irrelevant to the process

what principled cruz freeper has deserted him?

Anyone who votes, caucuses or merely discusses politics is relevant to the process.

I have followed this issue, and I have seen several FReepers who are dropping their support of Cruz over this issue. No doubt, some of that is BS, but not all.

I think Cruz should have apologized. But instead he said he would "apologize to no one." That makes him sound like an arrogant jerk who won't admit a mistake. In fact, it makes him sound like Obama.

This is a routine campaign mailer.

I see you are back spreading your lies. You have been all over these mailer threads, performing damage control for Cruz. Does he pay you for this?

If this mailer is "routine," please show us the comparable mailers from the other presidential candidates during this cycle.

Sounds like you’re just having a difficult time understanding that it’s a non-issue for some....nobody has to defend Cruz...he’ll stand either way the wind blows...and he’ll answer as he chooses and not to satisfy mens urgings to do otherwise.

Yes, Cruz had demonstrated that amply by refusing to apologize or take other remedial action.

Refusing to apologize for a misstep is a sign of immaturity and hubris. I fear that is shows Cruz does not have the temperment to be a chief executive.

Combine the mailer with his fake oath of office with Beck. That was really poor taste and a denegration of the oath. I wonder if Ted would take a fake wedding oath, and how his wife would feel about that.

Oh that's just nonsense again.....this is a political primary race....I do not expect candidates to play by kindergartner rules of engagement on a playground....as if they need to be taught manners.....it simply doesn't matter.

Yep, the mailer was a complete fake

The Cruz campaign has already admitted that they sent the mailer. Cruz himself was confronted about it and refused to apologize. The Iowa secretary of state has issued a public statement on the mailer.

Someone needs to make a “Report Card” of how many votes Cruz failed to cast in the Senate, where he IS obligated to show up and vote.

Everyone’s voting record is a matter of public record.

How many registered voters do you think there are in the US?

THE CRUZ MAILERS ARE MORE FRAUDULENT THAN EVERYONE THINKS / Ryan Lizza / The New Yorker

EXCERPT The Iowa secretary of state was mostly concerned that Cruz’s campaign mailers appeared partially disguised to look like an official communication from the state government.

After looking at several mailers posted online, I was more curious about how the Cruz campaign came up with its scores. On all the mailers I saw, every voter listed had only one of three possible scores: fifty-five per cent, sixty-five per cent, or seventy-five per cent, which translate to F, D, and C grades, respectively. Iowans take voting pretty seriously.

Why was it that nobody had a higher grade?

Although Iowa voter-registration information is free and available to the public, voter history is not. That information is maintained by the Iowa secretary of state, who licenses it to campaigns, super PACs, polling firms, and any other entity that might want it.

So was the Cruz campaign accurately portraying the voter histories of Iowans? Or did it simply make up the numbers?

It seems to have made them up. Dave Peterson, a political scientist at Iowa State University who is well-acquainted with the research on “social pressure” turnout techniques, received a mailer last week. The Cruz campaign pegged his voting percentage at fifty-five per cent, which seems to be the most common score that the campaign gives out.

(All of the neighbors listed on Peterson’s mailer also received a score of fifty-five per cent.) Peterson, who is actually a Hillary Clinton supporter, moved to Iowa in 2009. He told me that he has voted in three out of the last three general elections and in two out of the last three primaries.

“There are other people listed on my mailer who live in my neighborhood that are all different ages, but everyone on this sheet has the same score of fifty-five per cent,” he said. “Some are significantly younger and would have not been eligible to vote in these elections, and others are older and have voted consistently, going back years. There is no way to get to us all having the same score.” (Peterson also spoke with Mother Jones.)

If the Cruz campaign based its score on local elections, Peterson said, the number also wouldn’t make sense, based on his participation in those elections as well. A source with access to the Iowa voter file told me that he checked several other names on Cruz mailers and that the voting histories of those individuals did not match the scores that the Cruz campaign assigned them in the mailer. ---SNIP--
