Iowa's secretary of state chastised the presidential campaign of Senator Ted Cruz on Saturday for sending a mailer that he said violated "the spirit of the Iowa caucuses" and misrepresented state election law.
The secretary of state, Paul D. Pate, called the effort "misleading."
"Accusing citizens of Iowa of a 'voting violation' based on Iowa caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act," Mr. Pate said. "There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa caucuses."
Mr. Pate added that his office never "grades" voters, nor does it maintain records of caucus participation. He said that the office also did not "distribute" voter records, but they were available "for purchase for political purposes only, under Iowa Code."

They are a common practice. If the Cruz campaign really did put it out, they should apologize, point out that Trump is a flip-flopping-Johnny-come-lately campaign conservative...that Trump called Iowans stupid...and then tell everybody they have to get back to campaigning for victory.
Frankly, with this Cruz stunt and Trump’s anchor baby comments, we find that both of our favorite candidates are just “ politics as usual”. I expected better from both, to tell you the truth.
FYI, I am a Cruz 1, Trump 2, supporter, but both men have “chosen poorly”.
Probably wanted a couple things. Stop the phone ringing, today, and maybe shame the campaigns into not pulling this sort of action in the future. This isn't the last election the SoS has to deal with.
Who would haver thought that a campaign mailer, albeit a particularly nasty one, would so damage a leading candidate.
I bet it didn't go to more than 5,000 people.
Now it's a leading story in the NY Times and CNN. Probably a few front pages of other major papers by tomorrow AM.
I guess Ted Cruz doesn't have as many friends as he thought he did.
The only solution is to import more.
That way it can be a final solution to pesky Americans wanting to work in America.

I have no problem with you being the only person on the forum to buy into that theory of relativity.
Yikes.
I’m also a Cruz supporter and an elected official in my tiny Georgia county. This was sheer stupidity on Cruz’s part. People are very sensitive about this and don’t get the distinction between public record of whether you’ve voted and how you voted. I learned this in my first conversation with a neighbor and his hostile reaction to merely mentioning what is and isn’t a public record. Cruz not only turbo-charged this hostility with what looks like a Gestapo tactic, but IMHO lost many likely voters to other candidates. Totally unnecessary. As a donor, I’m pissed. What’s next, calling voters and telling them there’s a warrant out for their arrest unless they vote or donate to the campaign?
Oh my. This isn’t good.
..I wouldn’t have done it, but this isn’t beanbag as they say...
So officials are to publicly denounce of the basis of nicety? Well Ok then.
[I just received an email from Heidi. In it she pleads that unless they receive $100,000 in campaign funds now, they can’t fund their volunteers.]
I am a CRUZ supporter. It bothered me when he paid off Scott Walker’s campaign debts.
This will undo his run. No way they live this down.
Ethanol is not responsible for this bone-head move.
Yep. That was the moment the Governor declared war on Cruz.

Hey, the man has an opinion and he’s allowed to state it. Iowans have their opinions and they’re allowed to have them too.
And if someone wants to oppose ethanol on principle, they’re allowed to do that too, but they’re still going to face the fact that a lot of Iowans don’t like it.
. I ask that you pray for me that I may be Christ-like in word and deed.Who's stopping you Ted?
He's sounds more like a cult leader than a Presidential candidate.
Cruz has a knack for pissing off my wife too with the constant email spam. Cruz' campaign is like a virus and we had to resort to blocking his domain names.
I sent Cruz money. Everybody I send money to loses. I was hoping to break the jinx. Maybe next time.
I always vote so do not know how I would behave if I received one. Good luck to Cruz and Trump. Hoping Rubio goes down.
