Statement from (Iowa) Secretary of State Paul Pate Regarding Misleading Mailer from Cruz
Oskaloosa News ^

Posted on 01/30/2016 1:07:24 PM PST by springwater13

Today I was shown a piece of literature from the Cruz for President campaign that misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law. Accusing citizens of Iowa of a "voting violation" based on Iowa Caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act. There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses.

Additionally, the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office never "grades" voters. Nor does the Secretary of State maintain records related to Iowa Caucus participation. Caucuses are organized and directed by the state political parties, not the Secretary of State, nor local elections officials. Also, the Iowa Secretary of State does not "distribute" voter records. They are available for purchase for political purposes only, under Iowa Code." - Paul D. Pate, Iowa Secretary of State

Don’t know specifics. It might just be utterly tasteless and misleading. Or again it might look so much like something official that it is liable to legal action under some statute.

For Cruz’s sake (he does represent the gospel to many) I hope he doesn’t get embroiled in a huge controversy trying to defend this.

“This story is being stomped on for a reason.”

really? it’s already on Drudge referencing thehill.com:

http://www.drudgereport.com/

Just count down backwards from 10 and by the time you reach “1” it’s gonna be on CNN/FNC/CNN and then ABCCBSNBC.

The story is irrelevant to anyone who wasn’t sent the mailer.

Oh, I think it’s a huge deal. I just don’t think Cruz would have permitted it. And with Sundance being PUMA and supporting Trump for Thighness to beat, again, it smells like sabotage to me.

The Secretary of State statement is lighting a fire to the story. Cruz is finished.

The Secretary of State is a Trump backer. And it's too soon to say if Cruz is finished. Let's see how Monday night goes.

In superficialities, I’d tend to agree. Cruz has a smoother style. Trump is rough.

In issues of depth, the question might be different. We don’t see many things that we can view as X-rays of Trump’s heart and Cruz’s heart, so when we do, we should take sharp notice.

One biblical observation I can make about Trump is that when he changes, it’s almost always to the right. There is a biblical adage about turning to the right, IIRC. To see where someone is going, you also have to see where they came from.

“Agree. Let the man send shaming letters. He should send another round.”

This time with credit scores, their history of where they’ve lived in the last 20 years, and everything else public. Oh, and if they have bought guns or not. Add that. Go to the NICS records cruz, it’ll help you out!

It would be a waste of money in my house. Campaign mailersfrom any go in the trash. Unopened. So do mailings from the RNC for that matter. :)
Nothing but junkmail.

Who you vote for is not.

Not true. Who you vote for is recorded by the Secretary of State and is for sale to political organizations and 501C-3's.

How do you think you receive targeted requests for campaign contributions? Pure luck?

I posted this elsewhere, so will only briefly repeat it here: Between 1993 and 1996(ish...) I worked for a number of political campaigns in several states. Primarily doing campaign research and voter research. I had access to voting records in several states and had the capability to derive what were known as walking lists for campaign workers.

Those walking lists told campaign workers who lived in a house, when they last voted, and HOW they last voted (Republican or Democrat.) If the campaign paid for the data , we knew how long a person was registered with a specific party and the candidates they voted for.

The entire point of the walking lists was to guide campaign workers door to door, to know which doors to knock on (those who were friendly to Republican candidates, voted in primaries, etc..) and those who voted for the other party consistently. In short, we wanted our campaign workers to target their "get out the vote" efforts on those voters who had the most likely chance of getting out during the primaries, and avoid Democrat voters to not waste time on them, or motivate them in any way to get out and vote for their candidate (during the primaries) or again during the General Election.

There is no such thing as a secret vote in this country. None.

I feels like Cruz’s holding himself out as the candidate with integrity is being “trumped” by Cruz’s desire to win even if integrity suffers a bit. IMO, that’s a killer for Cruz. It certainly turns me off to him.

Well and he looks like a truth backer too.

People are going to look at this and say “WHAT?!?”

Even people who never got it.

This is not necessary DOOM for Cruz but I say it is a TEST for Cruz.

His only plausible way out, to me, is a humongous APOLOGY. Is he a big enough man to do it, even if the world is hooting at him? They may hoot today, but they will still remember it tomorrow.

The real damage will come when local news stations in Iowa run with it. These people are their neighbors.

Even people who didn't get the "violation" are going to be imagining how they'd feel if it was them.

Cruz should apologize; he might still lose Iowa due to it not percolating in soon enough before the vote, but the effect will carry over to other contests. In many wise eyes, changing means more than claiming to be just fine wherever you always were.

Trump would turn Hillary into a mop for the floor. He’s never really debated her. When he does, he’s going to prove the agent of release of a lot of pent up national resentment towards her.

It is his only option.

And he should do it quick before evening news get going. Otherwise local news will be:

"We contacted the Cruz campaign for comment, but they did not respond."

How many people caucus in Iowa? How many pieces of mail were stamped and sent? How much did that cost -- printing & mailing?

Big $$$, for sure. That kind of spending has to be approved by someone high in the Cruz organization.

Sabotage? Ordering a printing that size, packing the mailers, and stamping the mailers were NOT a quick afternoon job done in secret.
