The first Republican presidential debate of the season without front-runner Donald Trump generated smaller viewer interest than all but one of this cycle's prior GOP gatherings, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates â but still drew four times as many viewers as Trump's competing event.
In the metered-market overnights, which represent 56 of the nation's largest markets, Fox News Channel's debate from Iowa averaged an 8.4 household rating. This is up vs. the 7.4 overnight rating for the most recent GOP debate, on Fox Business Network earlier this month, but it stands as the second lowest-rated of the six Republican gatherings this cycle.
Nielsen will issue total-viewer estimates later Friday, but it's likely that last night's debate on FNC averaged in the vicinity of 12 million viewers.
Curiosity over the unpredictable Trump fueled record tune-in for the first GOP debate last summer, as Fox News Channel drew 24 million in August

So the lowest ratings had Trump in it? Yes. He built on the ratings. Upwards trajectory in ratings with Trump.
I’m not aware of exactly how these ratings are measured.
On which station would they have measure the rating for the Trump event? CNN? CSpan?
Weren’t most of the viewers on their computers? Are these numbers taken into consideration?
Shouldn't THIS be the headline?
Trumps new reality show flopped!

"TV Ratings: Fox News Debate Numbers Steady Without Donald Trump"
No one missed Trump. No one cared he wasn't there. The debate was saner without him, and it was a civilized debate for once.
Lowest ratings were on Fox Business. Almost every analysis of why it had the lowest ratings was due to limited access to the actual channel. It isn’t provided everywhere.
So did the lowest. The highest was the first debate. I would posit that the people are tired of the debates and that was the most deciding factor on whether they watched or not regardless of the presence or absence of Trump.
The event for Vets was planned and put together in just 24 hours.
And they beat every news broadcast on every other cable station.
The Trump event was carried live in it’s entirety on OANN and CSpan but this isn’t reflected in the ratings which only include CNN and MSNBC.
GOPe six months ago:
“Ahh, Trump won’t last long...He’ll get tired of this and in two weeks, he’s off doing something else...”
GOPe today:
“Ahh, Cruz won’t last long...He’ll get tired of this and in two weeks, he’s off doing something else...”
That’s also true, but the bottom line is that they put this together in just 24 hours.
And their 3 million viewers surpassed the numbers that any cable news program gets on their normal viewing night.
LOL
Do they really know how many were watching the Trump event? I doubt it.
He was running away from Megan Kellys hard questions. When he realized people saw his cowardice, he had to come up with some bogus campaign trick to distract from it.
Trump has never supported the military. He didn't become a Conservative until he saw a job opening in the oval office.
Did you know Cruz, for no reason at all other than to support the vets, also held an event and brought in 6 million dollars for vets just be cause he wanted to? And he wasn't running for or away from anything!! He just did it.
